Chose one of the following tools to be able to hear the dead with. Spirit Board, Tarokka Deck, A Unique Cup for Tea Leaves, or a tool of your own design that has been around a lot of death. Talk with your DM to find what works best, use the Horror Trinkets table from Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft for some ideas!

While attuned to this item,  and in your hand or on your person, you can choose to hear the voices of those departed with 10ft of you. The spirit can be any alignment and have been dead for any amount of time, but the voices are not in order, clear, or discernable without a successful DC 20 Perception (Wisdom) Check. 

Séance with The Departed

At night, while near the distorted voices that you can't quite make out, if you spend 1 minute focusing on the trinket, as you would if preparing and casting a ritual, then the voices can be heard clearly with a DC check of 15 instead. If successful, you can then speak to these spirits for up to five minutes. Once the item is used in this way, it can't be used again until Dusk the next day. 

Breaking your Final Link too Soon

The item is connected to a specific type of spirit that is based on a past trauma that has been left unresolved in the wielders past. Failure to resolve this trauma before attempting to break the attunement turns the item into a Cursed Object. The voices of the dead within 10ft of you speak to you whether to choose to or not, and the Cursed Object must remain within 10ft of the user at all times or it will teleport back to an unoccupied space within that distance of the user.

The curse is still removed if the trauma is resolved beyond this point, and the item then bestows the gift to the person naturally before returning to a normal trinket.

 Some examples of Specific Spirits the Item can Attune to:

• Children
• Parents of Deceased Children
• Those who Committed Suicide
• Warriors with True Hearts
• Wizards with Dark Natures

A Spirit Medium who attunes to this item can hear any spirits without the ritual, and can share their spirit talking gift with others through the use of their Spirit Medium feature. When the Trinket of The Medium is used in this way, only the Medium can speak, but during the Séance, the item allows up to 6 creatures to hear the responses of those that have yet to truly shuffle from this mortal coil and lasts for 30 minutes instead of only five.
