This book has 5 charges. A charge can be expended to cast Shield as a reaction. The shield is made out of paper from the book.
Also, as an action, charges can be expended to gain a paper shield. The paper flies out of the book and spins around you with a radius of 5 feet. Depending on the charges spent, you have cover from attacks from outside of the shield. 1 charge grants half cover, 2 charges grant three-quarters cover, and 3 charges grant full cover. A creature that passes through the shield takes 1d6 piercing damage. If an attack dealing fire damage is made against you, the shield is reduced to next lowest level of cover. The shield disappears after 1 minute, it is reduced from half cover to no cover, or you use a bonus action to dismiss it.
Notes: Warding
This is a fun item. This sounds like it was inspired by "Read or Die."
I am curious how come you picked piercing as the damage type for when a creature tries to pass through it. Also, you might want to clarify how or when a creature can pass through the shield.
I have never read Read or Die, it was inspired by the possibility of looking super cool.
I do not remember why I chose piercing damage, it clearly should be slashing damage. I imagined that a creature can simply move past the shield.
I would recommend a Dex save for the chance to avoid damage provided that the creature does not remain within 5 feet of the caster.
Also, how would one recover charges with an item like this?
Charges, once expended, are gone. The pages have been torn from the book.
I should have labeled this consumable.
Oh that's fine. I just wanted to make sure that there was no way to replace charges since it's a rather fun item.
