The range is a 1 mile radius. If anything unnatural is in that area the needle will spin slowly and rest for a moment pointing to the source. If there are more than one it rests a moment on one source and then slowly spins to the next source.

You can pull it out, open it, and check the reading for 1 action. You can look at it at any time. It’s always active. This is an ancient artifact passed down in your family so long no one knows who made it or why. You’re not sure what would happen if someone else were to use the item and attune it to themselves. You were told what it does from a small child and so that is etched in your brain.

The item is a small box made of ash wood and decorated with vines made of ornate metals that spread around the 3in cube box. It has hidden hinges that allow it to open smooth and shut with a satisfying CHT. There are some worn marks and the metal and wood are smooth from being handled by generations. When you open it, the box looks to split in half with the compass being in the bottom and the heavier side. The top is empty but you have saved a small bit of parchment jammed in there with a written message from your father. It’s no more than 2 sentences. You can come up with that message. Additionally, the item helps to calm your nerves and you feel it gives you direction even in times where the needle just slowly spins when nothing unnatural is near.
