Weapon (greatsword), legendary (requires attunement by a Creature of Evil Alignment)

Restored at last to glory, Atas the Unsurpassed -- All-Time All-Star of eons past -- gleams an eerily dark pitch that only seems to reflect light on its edges. Its chappe, hilt, & cross-guard are formed from the bones of an unknown creature, and the pommel is a polished obsidian orb.

You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. It has the following additional properties.

Victory Rush

Whenever you use it to reduce a creature to 0 hit points, cheers erupt as though from a raucous crowd. Surviving creatures within 30 feet of you must make a DC 18 Wisdom check or are frightened of you for 1 minute. At the start of each of their turns, they can make another Wisdom save to end the effect early as long as they are 60 feet from you or no longer within direct sight of you. Passing the save makes a creature immune to this effect for 24 hours.

When it frightens a foe, Atas the Unsurpassed grants you temporary hit points equal to a roll of half the creature’s hit dice. These hit points fade after 24 hours. As long as these temporary hit points last and you keep Atas the Unsurpassed in hand, you have advantage on attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks.

If you are reduced to 0 hit points while wielding Atas the Unsurpassed, it is shamed by your failure & denies any association with your scrub ass. It immediately unattunes to you until you sufficiently prove your worthiness in legendary battle -- at which point it can instantly reattune provided it is not attuned to another character. The requirements for earning its lost respect are at the GM's discretion. Until then, the sword appears & functions as a mundane greatsword.

King of the Ring

Once per day, Atas the Unsurpassed can announce your entrance & give you advantage on Charisma checks for negotiating your compensation for arranged combat during the next hour. For the purposes of this ability, "arranged combat" includes gladiatorial performance, military hazard pay, and contract killings.

While you hold the weapon, you have advantage on Acrobatics, Intimidation, & Performance checks related to martial prowess. You also can’t be charmed, deafened, or frightened.

The sword can be wielded one-handed by a character of 18 Strength, allowing for use of a shield -- though it can function as a finesse weapon to a wielder with two-hands. It also has the thrown property, but it requires two hands to throw. When thrown, it does 1d8 additional slashing damage & immediately returns to your hands after the attack. If you do not have a hand free, it lands at your feet.

Atas the Unsurpassed can cast the haste spell on you once per day. It decides when to cast the spell and maintains concentration on it so that you don’t have to.

Sentience

Atas the Unsurpassed is a sentient chaotic neutral weapon with an Intelligence of 16, a Wisdom of 8, and a Charisma of 24. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet.

The weapon can speak, read, and understand Common & Primordial, and can communicate with its wielder telepathically. Its voice booms like an orator addressing a packed arena. While you are attuned to it, Atas the Unsurpassed also understands every language you know. During combat it talks trash like an unemployed garbage man.

Personality

Atas the Unsurpassed speaks with the irrational confidence of a true showman, and it assumes everyone is aware -- if not in awe -- of its fame.

The sword’s purpose is to achieve multi-planar glory in mythical combat. Ultimately the target of its assault is irrelevant, so long as the bardic tales thus inspired carry down through the generations. It prefers not to operate in the shadows, as it exists to heap accolades upon its name. Therefore, it has a tendency to brag openly of its deeds, for better or worse. Similarly, it refuses to take credit for feats it has not performed, and it dislikes lies & fabricated stories. Rather, it tells "mildly" exaggerated tales of its accomplishments given the slightest opportunity, expecting all within earshot to appropriately appreciate them.

It secretly harbors a deep desire for vengeance on those that imprisoned it & erased its deeds from history, and any information that leads to its ancient rival may swiftly lead to obsession. At present, it assumes they were destroyed ages ago per Mephistopheles's explanation; however, it realizes the archdevil has no reason to be truthful & fervently hopes the mysterious, forgotten assailant is revealed to it -- alive & still killable -- somewhere in the realms. This dream of revenge would represent the pinnacle of its personal achievements.

Despite its rampant egotism, Atas the Unsurpassed feels a strange kinship to Wave, Whelm, and Blackrazor, three other weapons locked away under White Plume Mountain. It wants the weapons to be united again and wielded together in combat; it thinks Whelm is a blast, Wave is a bit naive, and Blackrazor ironically needs to take it down a notch.

Atas the Unsurpassed's hunger for fame must be regularly fed, and if the blade does not receive sufficient public adulation every month, a conflict arises between the sword & the wielder that may result in power suppression or even forced unattunement (GM's discretion).

Proficiency with a Greatsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Graze. If your attack roll with this weapon misses a creature, you can deal damage to that creature equal to the ability modifier you used to make the attack roll. This damage is the same type dealt by the weapon, and the damage can be increased only by increasing the ability modifier.
