Weapon (crossbow, heavy), artifact (requires attunement)

A large obsidian crossbow recovered from a long-forgotten civilization deep below ground. Once charged this wondrous invention fires bolts of arcane-infused energy with pinpoint accuracy. Requires fair strength to wield while standing due to its bulky dimensions. The crossbow appears to charge itself largely upon the lifeforce of its wielder's adversaries, but in a pinch the wielder can charge it with his/her own lifeforce.

Requires STR 13 to wield. Behaves like a heavy crossbow +2, with a few notable exceptions. Despite not having a traditional string and ammunition system, this still retains the loading property which can still be mitigated by an owner with the crossbow expert feat. This crossbow gains a charge every time it wounds an enemy. Upon successfully gaining three charges the wearer can use their action to call upon an arcane bolt which deals the crossbow's regular damage as well as an additional 1d12+4. All of this damage can then be converted to either lightning, fire, or cold damage, depending on the player's choice. Alternatively, the wielder can also expend one of their hit die to immediately charge the weapon.

Proficiency with a Heavy Crossbow allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
