Armor (shield), artifact (requires attunement)

This black iron shield is embossed with a multitude of cracks and markings, all faintly glowing a purplish hue. At the center of this shield is a round amethyst, melded into the iron that surrounds it. It can be considered a +1 shield.

As an action you can throw this shield 20ft, or until it hits an object or creature, the shield then shatters into 6 fragments. This triggers the effect of 'Animate Objects' on these 6 fragments only. The core amethyst is not animated and falls to the ground for the duration, it is the source of the spell and if it takes 25 points of damage the spell will end.

The fragments of the shield are considered small objects and have a flying speed of 30ft. They all have the following statistics:

HP:20

AC:15                                     +6 to hit for attacks, 5ft range,  1d8+2 slashing damage.

STR: 6,   DEX: 14,   CON: 10,   INT & WIS: 3,   CHA: 1

As a bonus action you can issue a mental command to as many of the fragments as you wish (the same command for each one commanded). You decide what action they take and where they move on their turn, or you can issue a general command such as to guard a particular chamber or hallway. Without an issued command the fragments will only defend themselves against hostile creatures. Once given a task they will attempt to follow it through until completion to the best of their ability.

When an individual piece loses all hit points it will return to the core and reattach itself to it.

Once the ability of the shield is used it cannot be used until you complete a long rest.

Shields require the Utilize action to Don or Doff. You gain the Armor Class benefit of a Shield only if you have training with it.
