A wizard or warlock has used the Comprehend Languages spell to write a small booklet of survival phrases and basic vocabulary from a chosen language to Common. The chosen language is phonetically written in Common script and thus cannot be used for written messages. While you are attempting to speak to or comprehend a creature with this language, the DM may periodically require an intelligence or charisma save.
Speaking
Speak simply! Your DM might decide that you must roll at disadvantage if you use big words.
Nat 1: Uh, why are we rolling initiative?
Up to 9: The creature does not understand you and is becoming frustrated. Disadvantage on the next communication attempt.
10-19: The creature gets the gist of what you are saying and may choose to respond.
20+: The creature is impressed with your pronunciation and vocabulary! Advantage on the next persuasion check or communication attempt with this creature.
Listening
Not all locals are friendly. Your DM may have you roll at disadvantage if the creature dislikes you or is deliberately being unclear.
Nat 1: Those are fighting words -- I think!
Up to 9: A couple of those words sounded familiar, but as you frantically leaf through the booklet you become flustered. Disadvantage on the next communication attempt.
10-19: You may have missed a word or two, but you can piece together what the creature is communicating.
20+: You not only understood what they said, but you heard them emphasize certain syllables -- was that sarcasm? Advantage on the next insight check or communication attempt with this creature.
