The wizard Adulenor once created this strange item. It is a small golden compass with a circular dial containing a silver triangle. This ring can be turned a full 360° but the triangle must point towards the engraved letters N, E, S or W. Depending on the chosen letter, the compass will work in a specific function.
N
If you choose "N" (navigation), the compass will work as a regular old compass, i.e. its needle will always point north. It will do this even when the compass is exposed to magnetic fields.
E
If you choose "E" (explosion), the compass will work as a last-ditch weapon. It starts glowing red, getting intenser by the second. If the selector stays in the "E"-position the compass detonates after 6 seconds with the same effect as a level 5 Fireball spell. After detonating, the compass is completely destroyed and cannot be used again.
S
If you choose "S" (sustenance", the compass will indicate the direction of the closest location where you can get food and supplies. This can be a hidden stash of food, a farmer's house where you can buy items or the nearest store in the next village or town or even the carcass of freshly deceased game. It will NOT point towards living creatures that could be hunted.
W
If you chosse "W" (water), the compass will indicate the direction of the closest location where you can get clean water. This can be a fountain, a well, a creek, a lake, or even the location where you can dig a maximum of 3 ft to get to a source of water. It will only select natural sources of water, so it cannot find water in barrels or bottles.
Notes: The compass must be carried around the neck on a chain for a full 24 hours without looking at it even once.
