You have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. Proficiency with a shortsword will give you proficiency with this blade. The blade is hidden in the cane and has a false appearance as such. A successful DC 18 Intelligence (Investigation) check will reveal its true nature. A creature automatically succeeds in the check if it has seen it drawn out already. Drawing the blade out is the same as drawing any weapon.
While you have your own spellcasting focus in the hilt, or handle of the cane, you can use the weapon itself as a spellcasting focus. You gain a +1 bonus to spell attack rolls and your save DC with this blade magnifying your spells. You can also use the blade's animated feature only if the spellcasting focus is in place.
As a bonus action, you can say a secret passphrase and animate the blade. You can make an attack using your spellcasting modifier to hit (+ 1 bonus to hit) with your blade as part of the same bonus action. On subsequent bonus actions, you can move your blade around and make an additional attack with the weapon. The blade stays animated for 1 minute or ends early if you take hold of the blade again or the distance between you and the blade exceeds 150 feet. Once you use this feature you must finish a long rest or use a spell slot of level 2 or higher to use the animated feature again. (Since the blade is no longer in your hand, you can't use it as a spellcasting focus and do not have the bonuses associated with it unless you take hold of the blade again.)
While animated the blade has the same stats as the Flying Sword from the Monster Manual except for the following: it can only hover 2 to 5 feet above solid ground, and it does 4 (1d6 + 1) slashing damage on a hit. (It has an AC of 17, 17 hit points, and flying (hovering) speed of 50 ft.) Also if it is attacked and reaches 0 hit points the animated feature ends early. The animated blade falls to the ground and takes a permanent -1 penalty to damage rolls. If it reaches a calmative penalty of -5, the blade breaks completely and can no longer be used. (With permission of the DM, any blacksmith can repair it for approximately 10 - 15 gp for a + 1, not to exceed its normal stats. Or, if it is broken altogether, you can fix a new blade on the hilt for 50 - 75 gp.)
Proficiency with a Shortsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.
Vex. If you hit a creature with this weapon and deal damage to the creature, you have Advantage on your next attack roll against that creature before the end of your next turn.
