Weapon (greatsword), artifact (requires attunement)

"In Xaferan society, there's quite an elaborate story to this sword. A traveler along the road to Absolus regaled me with all of the legends about this sword for five days straight... At the end of it all, I walked away really angry and itching for a fight, which seems to be a reoccurring theme whenever I talk to someone from Xafera. Anyways, as the story goes a young Xaferan girl who lost her family to Nightwalkers grew up wanting answers and revenge against the creatures who took her father from her. She grew up in Caroack back when that was pretty much the only town that could stand on its own. She joined the town's defenses, traveled the countryside, and quickly learned that the only reason Caroack was still standing was by sheer luck. Caroack's "defenses" were really just evacuation supervisors. They were to facilitate any sort of refugees to the town safe from whatever homes were being destroyed and gutted by Nightwalkers. There was a primal rage that just continued to build up and build up inside of this little girl... Long story short there came a day that the girl couldn't look the other way anymore and did what no one else would. She picked up the nearest weapon she could find, just some rusty greatsword hanging inside of a blacksmith's shop. The sword was twice her size, and if that wasn't crazy enough she strode right up to one of the Nightwalkers, pulled the sword back behind her, barely lifted it over her head, and let gravity do the rest of the work. Wildly enough the Elves in Ioeclar will swear that they recall in a distant past a primal scream that could only be described as an explosion straight from the Nine Hells..." -A bard from Fimos recalling the legends he's heard about Talsyn The Xaferan Goddess of Valor.

This is a weapon that was created by Anor III as part of his personal Magnum Opus collection. Similar to the other god artifacts he created this weapon grows with the wielder's piety level with the god that the weapon belonged to. However, as all weapons part of his collection, they are susceptible to outside influence and can be corrupted. Sometimes it may be necessary to bring the weapon to someone of similar talent and skill who can begin the exaltation process. It is up to the DM to both award Piety where necessary and consider providing quests or processes to begin the "Exaltation Process" and the "Purification Processes" of the Magnum Opus. If the DM is running or interacting with an artificer consider locking the exaltation process to challenge and give that character a goal and consider leaving the purification process to the wielder of the Magnum Opus.

Avasys or Salidon are elvish words meaning Valor and Slaughter respectively. Depending on where a traveler might come from they might recognize the name of this sword as either one of those names. A weapon with a long history and wielded by a number of people in the name of its forebear Talsyn, the Xaferan patron Goddess of War. An artifact made by Anor III, this sword was used to seal away Qamet, the tyrannical an ancient Black Dragon of the Xaferan Plains, shortly before Talsyn's mortal passing and ascension to Aeyova. Truthfully the sword recognizes both names but was created with the soul of Adelaide Encan and recognizes that as its true name.

Pre-Corruption

The soul within was Talsyn's closest friend, empathizing with Talsyn's rage and love for their people, but lacking the strength to fight, Adelaide was willing to give their life for Talsyn's cause and see Xafera freed from Qamet's clutches.

Post-Corruption

After the sealing of Qamet, the Black Dragon's soul slowly began to corrupt Adelaide and seep out into the world. Over decades of work may finally be brought to fruition as the Cult of the Black Scale works in Xaferan society to locate Adelaide and find a way to bring back their lord Qamet from his eternal rest.

Sentience.

Adelaide is a sentient weapon with two personalities that alternate as the blade is purified by a follower of Talsyn.

The original personality, Avasys, is a neutral good personality with an Intelligence of 20, a Wisdom of 10, and a Charisma of 22. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet.

While the corrupted side, Salidon, is a chaotic evil personality with an Intelligence of 18, a Wisdom of 15, and a Charisma of 19. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet.

The weapon can speak, read, and understand Common, and can communicate with its wielder telepathically so long as it remains in physical contact. Adelaide's original voice is warm and comforting, while its corrupted side is deep and cold.

Personality.

Adelaide while in Talsyn's hands had only one goal, to be the instrument that Talsyn wanted it to be. Be it a weapon, or a symbol. Through Talsyn's decisions and choices in life, the goddess inadvertently shaped Adelaide's personality. Adelaide has grown a healthy respect for the art of war, honor in combat, and valor above all else. If ever the sword finds itself in the hands of another user they would only react to a wielder who they think embodies these aspects of Talsyn.

However, with the introduction of Qamet's influence, Adelaide finds their personality and values warped. Valuing vengeance, burning a settlement to the ground, or leaving no man standing. If ever this aspect of the sword finds itself in the hands of someone whose back is against the wall, willing to give themselves to the sword, it will do anything it takes to remain in control.

Attunement.

By a creature connected to Talsyn, in some way. Either unknowingly blessed under her star, chosen as their patron, or recognized as her champion. The process itself requires the user to give into a rage and lust for combat while wielding the weapon. Upon showing the sword that they are a worthy successor to Talsyn's legacy, the sword will recognize them as Talsyn's Champion, and permit them attunement.

Abilities

Adelaide is an artifact many thought lost to time. It cannot hide its age and thus the weapon exists now in a 'sealed' state wherein the weapon is not much greater than a regular sword. If one wishes to unlock its full potential then they will have to bring it to Anor or a maker of similar talent, who will then begin the process of Exalting the blade (A process up to the DM.) The wielder must also consider which aspect of the sword they would like to appeal to, as either form, Avasys or Salidon, are represented very differently. Only when the sword has been brought to the next step in the exaltation process, and the wielder's piety with Talsyn meets the requirement does the sword unlock its next potential in addition to any previous abilities.
