Armor (shield), artifact (requires attunement by a non-evil, living creature)

A powerful mithral shield belonging to Zeus and often borrowed by Athena, Aegis is a legendary item belonging to the gods.

Divine Power

Aegis was forged by the gods, and so is is godly in power. In addition to its other properties, Aegis deals 1d20 Radiant damage to anyone (other than an Aberration, Fiend, or immortal god, who take 24d20 damage) who attunes to it. Resistance or Immunity cannot lessen the damage, and Zeus, Athena, and Hephaestus can safely attune to Aegis without taking any damage.

Properties

Aegis has the following random properties:

  • 2 minor beneficial properties
  • 1 major beneficial property
  • 2 minor detrimental properties

In addition, Aegis forces anyone who attacks the holder to make a DC 20 CON saving throw and a DC 20 WIS (Perception) saving throw on every turn they spend in the presence of the shield or be frightened by them for 1 hour or until they succeed on both saves.

Destroying the Aegis

To destroy the shield, the following must be accomplished, in the order presented:

  • It must be crushed by the titanic gears of Mechanus.  Doing so will unleash an explosion of harmless golden light, which flows out a thousand feet before be sucked back into the Aegis, restoring its remains, but permanently weakening it - once this is achieved, it does not need to ever be done again, though the other effects must occur within one year of each other. 1% chance this has already happened when the shield is found.
  • The artifact must be dropped in the River Styx and left there for at least 20d4 hours.
  • The item has to be bathed in the blood of a Celestial or god.
  • Finally, the Aegis must be taken to a volcano in Arborea, near Mount Olympus. The volcano is a forge of Hephaestus, Greek god of smiths, who will take the statistics of a male solar, Neutral Good in alignment, if the party gets past all his devious traps.  He may not attack if reasoned with. If the Aegis is melted in the lava of one of Hephaestus's volcano-forges, it seems to be destroyed, and, if all the previous tasks have been completed, it is. Otherwise, it reforms in the presence of the deity whom it belongs to.

Shields require the Utilize action to Don or Doff. You gain the Armor Class benefit of a Shield only if you have training with it.

Notes: Bonus: Armor Class, Frightened, non-evil, living creature, Control, Buff, Debuff, Combat, Warding, Instrument, enchantment
