When worn as an independent piece of armor, a gambeson features a high collar, a couple dozen layers, and falls between hip and mid-thigh in length. With so many layers, a fully padded gambeson can be very stocky as well as insulating - limiting mobility and causing overheating in combat... But its protection is vital for those without access to more elaborate forms of armor.

 

Padded armor consists of quilted layers of cloth and batting.
