Jack armor consists of a thin gambeson worn under a high-collared, buff leather vest, typically hemmed at waist or hip, and sometimes including attachment points for sleeves or additional armor. The vest is lined by layers of felt or canvas, and then reinforced with small, hand-sewn rectangles of scrap metal.
Since the segmented pieces are sewn where they are not visible, the metal can be recycled from broken or discarded armor, and scavenged from multiple different sources. Given access to a supply of scrap metal, simple jack armor can easily be maintained by hand for many years.
Ignore "studded leather" - studded leather is a fantasy misinterpretation of what jack armor and brigandine armor look like in historical documents and extant pieces. If your armor has spikes or metal bits added to it for "the look," feel free to add that in RP all you want (with DM permission, ofc).
Made from tough but flexible leather, studded leather is reinforced with close-set rivets or spikes.
