Wondrous Item, uncommon

A small gold necklace with a pendant in the shape of an owl, representing Tyto, the god of language and communication.  Carved leaves of jade are arranged to create detailed feathers, and the eyes are made of mother of pearl with a single dark rubiy inlaid in the centre of each.  The amulet contains magical knowledge of every language ever created.

The amulet contains 100 charges.  When donned, you specify one language that you do not understand and that you are aware exists.  At the start of a long rest, you can choose to spend one hour studying this language. If you do so, expend charges from the amulet equal to 1d4 plus half your intelligence modifier (rounded down).  When all charges are expended, the studied language is permanently added to your languages known.  Once you learn the specfied language though this or other means, the amulet falls from your neck and regains all expended charges.

Curse.  This amulet is cursed, a fact that is NOT revealed by an identify spell.  The amulet's curse can however be deduced from its effects.  Once you don this amulet, you can't doff it unless you are targeted by the remove curse spell or similar magic, or you learn your specified language.  If targeted by the remove curse spell or similar magic, Tyto spitefully extracts its knowledge from your mind, causing the amulet to drop from your neck and regain all expended charges.  While wearing the amulet, if you fail to study a language for two consecutive long rests, you become haunted by the avatar of Tyto.  While haunted, you suffer the following effect:

Tyto's Discipline

During each long rest, you experience a vision or dream of Tyto's avatar, who scolds you for your laziness. After regaining health at the end of your rest, you suffer 1d8 of psychic damage. The damage dealt by this effect increases by 1d8 for each consecutive long rest you have not expended charges from the amulet since you became haunted. The haunting ends upon expending 1 or more charges of the amulet through study.
