Armor (shield), very rare (requires attunement)
While holding this shield, you can speak its command word as a bonus action to cause it to animate. The shield leaps into the air and hovers in your space to protect you as if you were wielding it, leaving your hands free. The shield remains animated for 1 minute, until you use a bonus action to end this effect, or until you are incapacitated or die, at which point the shield falls to the ground or into your hand if you have one free.
Shields require the Utilize action to Don or Doff. You gain the Armor Class benefit of a Shield only if you have training with it.
Notes: Utility, Warding
Kenku, that is an awesome item variant.
But nothing stops you from activating it and then also using a second shield with a holy symbol on it.
So you can effectively double shield here.
Except for the last sentence that says, "You can benefit from only one shield at a time."
Your Crossbow/Dex-centric PC will thank you!
Does this item basically just give you +2 to your AC?
or, if you’re a character that already used a shield... potentially let’s you use a two handed weapon, or grapple/use items easily. Or cast spells.
My favorite thing about the item though is that it’s real cool visually.
Could a Paladin or Cleric put an Emblem on this and use it as a Holy Symbol while it is animated?
when it's hovering, you wouldn't be holding the shield.
and you need to hold your divine focus, to replace a material component
Can It be made out of adamantine combine with Bahamuts scales
For the animated Shield
Would you still be able to use the Animated Shield even if you're not proficient with shields?
The rule for Armor Proficiency (including shields) says that "if you wear armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells."
But since Animated Shield is not a spell and only requires you to hold it and speak a command word, i'd say you wouldn't need to be proficient with shields to use it.
I mean, it could.
It does 😁
Question! Does this magic item require proficiency in shields to be used?
Can a monk use this and still use all their abilities?
does animated shield work with a regular shield also being worn.
I would like to ask community opinions on whether or not this shield would inhibit the Bladesong ability of the School of Bladesinging wizard.
I personally say it would not, largely due to the line in the description of the shield that says, "as if you were wielding it." This implies that this does not count as wielding the shield. However, the description of the Bladesong does say using a shield, not wielding one. So in that case, I feel it's up to some DM interpretation.
I'd love to know everyone else's thoughts on this though.
It depends on if you speak it's name before you wild shape I'd say. As you aren't technically wielding it it'd be DM discretion, but should be good for a minute. I would, depending on what you wildshaped into, make you roll a dex. Save at the end to see if you stepped on it and broke it 😆.
How often can this be used? I don't really see a limit mentioned and since it's only a basic shield I'd say that there isn't one.
