Staff, artifact (requires attunement by a sorcerer, warlock, or wizard)

This crooked staff is carved from wood and bathed in gold, topped with 7 elemental jewels. The staff was designed through the laborious crafting of a guild of ancient adventurers and was kept safe in their tomb. When touched, the skull expels dark green gas.

Beneficial Properties. While the staff is on your person, you gain the following benefits:

  • You can choose to know 7 additional spells of your choice from the sorcerer, warlock, or wizard spell lists. The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
  • As a bonus action, every undead creature you choose that you can see gains 20 temporary hit points. An undead can only benefit from this effect once every 24 hours.
  • You can wield the staff as a +3 quarterstaff that deals an extra 10 (3d6) necrotic damage on a hit.

Guild Possession. The Guildmaster's Staff can only be attuned to if its previous owner dies or willingly unattunes to this item. creatures not attuned to the staff that willingly touch it are targeted by a random spell detailed below (spell save DC 27, +19 to hit with spell attacks). Spells cast by the staff don't require concentration and last their full duration.

1 The staff casts shatter as a 5th level spell centered on you.
2 The staff casts lightning bolt as a 5th level spell.
3 The staff casts melf's acid arrow as a 5th level spell.
4 The staff casts scorching ray as a 5th level spell.
5 The staff casts mind spike as a 5th level spell. The creature attuned to the staff learns their location.
6 The staff casts conjure elemental. The summoned elemental is immediately hostile and attacks any creature not attuned to the staff.
7 The staff casts cloudkill centered on itself.

Spell Mastery. The Guildmaster's Staff has 7 charges and regains 1d4 + 3 expended charges daily at dawn. While holding the staff, you can expend 1 + spell slot level charges to cast one of your spells without expending a spell slot.

Destroying the Staff. The staff can only be destroyed if all of the creatures that have ever attuned to it are dead.
