This grappling hook launcher connects to the wrist and can be utilized in a number of ways. It has a spring loaded gear that allows the user to quickly pull themselves towards the claws target or to pull items closer to the player. It can be used to quickly climb to higher ground, snatch an item and bring it to yourself from a distance and for mounting/controlling the direction of a monster provided the correct strength check is made. Attached to a sturdy length of rope extending from the launcher is a golden claw. This claw has been enchanted with the ability to grasp onto and even pierce surfaces.
To launch the grappling hook you must make a Ranged Attack and the roll must equal 10 + 2 per 10ft from the target. If you successfully get the grappling hook to the point you want, the claw at the end pierces into the surface around it. The claw can easily pierce wood and stone, but cannot pierce metal.
While in place the grappling hook can hold up to 500lbs. If there is more weight on the rope, there is a 50% chance the claw detaches from the surface. At the start of each round roll a d20, on an odd number the claw fails.
If the claw is targeted by dispel magic or another magical effect that cancels spells, the claw immediately detaches.
The Animated Grappling Hook can also be used during combat. You can use your action to launch the grappling hook and successfully hit your target, you then make a Strength check and must hit your target’s AC. If they are wearing metal armor, the hook will have no effect. If you are successful the target takes 1d6 piercing damage and is grappled by you. You can then use your bonus action to pull them 5ft closer to you or pull yourself 5 feet closer to them (depends on the size and weight of the monster).
The grappled creature can use their action to pull the hook out by making a successful DC 15 Strength check, provided they are able to reach it.
- Monster Mounting
After successfully grappling a monster, the player can make a, Athletics check with a DC10 to pull themselves up onto the part of the monster that has been grappled. By utilizing the grappling hook, the Grappler can pull themselves towards the monster’s body and latch onto its back, leg, arm or tail. While mounting the monster, a Strength Save will need to be made each round or you will be thrown off. If you manage to stay on, you can make one of three actions on your turn
Option 1: Attack with advantage (only works with one handed weapons)
Option 2: Direct Movement (only works if grappling the monster’s head) - Causes the creature to utilize the first half of its movement on its next turn in the direction of the player’s choice. Experienced grapplers find ways to use the environment to their advantage in this situation. This is especially useful for mounting Huge and Gargantuan monsters that like to charge around and make a mess of things.
Option 3: Entangle or Pin Down - The Grappler can utilize additional rope and attempt to climb to a different part of the monster’s body to try to tie it up. This will be most successful if used on the monster's legs. If successful, you may cause bludgeoning damage from the fall and it will be knocked prone. This can also be useful for pinning down smaller, quicker monsters that would otherwise avoid attacks or seek to flank the party. - Retrieve Item
Make a ranged attack of10 + 2 per 10ft from the item. The grappling hook can be launched towards an item with the goal of grabbing it and bringing it back to the player. The item must be small enough to fit within the claws of the hook, in which case it can easily be pulled back to the player for retrieval. If the item is too large to fit within the claws, the grappling hook will dig its claws into the item being retrieved. This may shatter the item depending on its material type. This does not work on metal.
Proficiency with a Heavy Crossbow allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
