Weapon (trident), very rare (requires attunement by a person sitting in contemplation over the Trident for one night while in earshot of the ocean.)

The consecrated trident of the Herald of Shar-Ngolyeth. The trident is rough to the touch and seemingly carved from the bones of some unidentifiable sea creature. A negative energy wreathes it from shaft to prongs.

Magic Weapon

The Trident of the Herald is a magic weapon that grants a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. When you hit with it, the target takes an extra 1d10 necrotic damage.

The Fate of the Ocean

On a critical hit, the target's lungs fill with water that cannot be expelled for 1 minute, forced to experience the fate of a doomed sailor. Creatures that cannot breathe water begin suffocating and creatures that can breathe water are forced to hold their breath for the duration.

Chosen Herald
  • You can speak Void Speech fluently.
  • You are resistant to Thunder and Cold damage but vulnerable to Fire Damage
  • You can breathe Underwater
Voice of the Deeps

Once per day, the herald may attempt to sway an audience of listeners with their rolling, droning speech, fascinating them for 5 minutes and making them dismiss or forget what they’ve seen recently unless they make a successful DC 13 Wisdom saving throw at the end of that period. If the saving throw succeeds, they remember whatever events the herald sought to erase.

Curse - Call of the Deep

This item is cursed. By attuning to the trident, the wielder has bound themselves to serve Shar-Ngolyeth. The owner now feels a strong compulsion to return to the ocean when more than 10 miles from the coast. Thereafter, the almost imperceptible sound of the ocean mixes with eldritch whispers of forbidden knowledge in the owners mind at every waking moment. While attuned to the trident, at every dawn the player must make a DC15 wisdom saving throw. The attuned may choose to fail this save. On each failure, their connection to He Who Lurks Below is strengthened and they are able to decipher forbidden truths in the whispers. Each failure causes the following changes in order:

  1. Your skin is now perpetually covered in a thin slim that cannot be washed away. You gain the ability to cast Charm Person once per day.
  2. Your eyes have nearly doubled in size and bulge forth from your head. Your lips have nearly completely disappeared. Once per day, as an action, you can offer a prayer to Shar-Ngolyeth, and gain Truesight for 10 minutes.
  3. Webbing has appeared between your toes and several of your fingers have fused together into finlike appendages. Your dexterity is increased by 1 and you now have swim speed equal to your movement speed.
  4. His call can no longer be resisted. The attuned completes their transformation into a Deep One Archimandrite and attempts to return to the nearest ocean to find their god.

The physical changes wrought by the trident aren’t considered magical in nature (and therefore can’t be dispelled), but they can be undone by any effect that removes a curse, such as a greater restoration or remove curse spell.

Proficiency with a Trident allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Topple. If you hit a creature with this weapon, you can force the creature to make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 plus the ability modifier used to make the attack roll and your Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, the creature has the Prone condition.
