Crafted by the legendary Elven assassin, Penelope Wright, this shortbow, made of adamantine-black titanium alloy and embedded with arcane elven runes, is truly a weapon made for a merciless killer. Wright forged this weapon in the heart of an abandoned smithy of a powerful, deceased Shadar-kai in the shadowfell. She then trapped the soul of a vampire that she had slain on one of her bounties in the bow itself and bound him to her servitude in the weapon. Avaethon ("True Shot" in Elvish) glows a faint red around its runes and gives off 5 feet of dim light in darkness. While you are attuned to this bow, it feels natural in your grip, almost like you've had possession of the bow for centuries.
If purified, the bow's color becomes a radiant, nearly blinding azure color as its darkness is cast away and replaced with pure positive energy that gives the bow an angelic look. Its dark powers are replaced with blessed abilities granted to it by The Light.
You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. It has the following additional properties.
Illuminated Ammunition. All arrows shot from this bow are considered magical, as radiant energy encases the arrow when it is shot until it hits something. When you hit with this weapon, you deal an additional 2d8 radiant damage.
Sight of the Hunter. You activate the bow's innate, steadfast tracking magic. You gain truesight out to a range of 60 feet for 1 minute. In addition, if you hit a creature with Sneak Attack damage, the target must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of you, and you always know the location of the target while you have truesight from this property as long as the target is on the same plane as you. Once this property is used, it can't be used again until the next dawn.
Hero's Undying Fortitude. While holding Avaethon You have advantage on death saving throws and resistance to poison damage. In addition, your hit point maximum cannot be reduced by magical effects and you cannot die from old age.
Last Shot. The bow gives you one last surge of heroic adrenaline when you are at death's door. The first time a creature reduces you to 0 hit points while in combat, you can use your reaction to make an attack with Avaethon against the creature before falling unconscious. If the attack hits, it deals Sneak Attack damage as the creature is surprised that you are still standing after a fatal blow. Once this property is used, it can't be used again until the next dawn.
Holy Strike. You imbue an arrow you shoot from Avaethon with empowered positive energy. When you hit a creature with Sneak Attack damage, the attack becomes a critical hit. In addition, if the target is surprised, it must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take 12d12 radiant damage. If this damage reduces the creature to 0 hit points, it dies, and you regain hit points equal to half the radiant damage dealt. Once this property is used, it can't be used again until the next dawn.
Sentience. Avaethon is a sentient chaotic good weapon with an Intelligence of 17, a Wisdom of 13, and a Charisma of 19. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 30 feet.
The weapon can speak, read, and understand Common, and can communicate with its wielder telepathically. Its voice is low and compelling.
Personality. A stoic and shy but loyal and amiable spirit named Achlys lives within the bow. The weapon is loyal to its user and congratulates them when they accomplish a goal of theirs. It takes pleasure in seeing creatures who have been trapped be freed and likes to be used as a conducive means to that end. It values loyalty, freedom, and dignity and wishes to make sure that others don't fall into the same dark path that it was forced to fall down.
Proficiency with a Shortbow allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
