An Arcane Catalyst is, at its core, a supercharged Mana Stone and functions in almost exactly the same manner. Coalesced from the Winds of Aether this gem of crystalized magic this item can never hold more spell levels than the number it was created with, but therein lies the difference.
An Arcane catalyst holds a minimum of 10 spell levels, but can hold a maximum of 78. Such awesome power comes at a price though. If ever used to cast more than one 8th and one 9th level spell then the wielder must make an intelligence save DC equal to the maximum spell levels the catalyst can hold, or the Catalyst erupts violently. This explosion deals 2d4 damage per spell level the catalyst was created with in a 1 mile radius.
If ever the last spell level is used from the Catalyst it explodes in a fashion identical to the above description.
Thankfully, the method of creating such a catalyst is just as dangerous and twice as difficult, so few, if any currently exist. If any did, they would represent the kind of power for which nations would go to war. Just possessing such an item could make you the target of adventurers, organizations, magical beings of all kinds, and depending on the power of the catalyst, the gods themselves.
