Dragon scale mail is made of the scales of one kind of dragon. Sometimes dragons collect their cast-off scales and gift them to humanoids. Other times, hunters carefully skin and preserve the hide of a dead dragon. In either case, dragon scale mail is highly valued.
While wearing this armor, you gain a +1 bonus to AC, you have advantage on saving throws against the Frightful Presence and breath weapons of dragons, and you have resistance to one damage type that is determined by the kind of a dragon that provided the scales (see the table).
Additionally, you can focus your senses as an action to magically discern the distance and direction to the closest dragon of the type of armor within 30 miles of you. This special action can't be used again until the next dawn.
Dragon | Resistance |
---|---|
Black | Acid |
Blue | Lightning |
Brass | Fire |
Bronze | Lightning |
Copper | Acid |
Gold | Fire |
Green | Poison |
Red | Fire |
Silver | Cold |

How much would it cost??
so how many is scales is reasonable to make one of these (we used a young dragon but im wondering overall)
So I came across some White dragon scale armor, but my character is a gloomstalker ranger. So I don't want him to wear white armor. does anyone know of a way to possibly die this armor black? either magical or other wise?
Scale mail says disadvantage on stealth, is that true for dragon scale mail?
Yes, unless you take the Medium Armor Master feat, or play an Armorer Artificer and pick the Infiltrator armor to apply. But yes, disadvantage applies to this
My two coppers:
For those Druids, etc. wondering about the "metal" part, as a DM I would consider the scales of the dragon (or whatever critter, could be a hydra) to be natural, not metal. However, odds are that they would incorporate bits of chain mail here and there to cover some of the gaps as well as to attach the plates together. Using just leather ties isn't going to hold up over time and would need constant repair.
Now you could also argue that regular leather armor uses metal as part of its construction (grommets and various fasteners come to mind). Without those, the leather won't last as long, need to be repaired more often, and the protection won't be as strong.
So I suppose it depends on your DM's interpretation of "no metal". I'm not going to penalize a druid if they have standard leather armor that uses metal grommets and fasteners. But if the druid insists on a no-metal variation, I would probably penalize the armor in some way. Either it lets more damage through, it's AC drops by a point, or the amount of "hit points" the armor has before it needs to be repaired would be less than normal.
I wonder what bonuses you get with platinum scales from bahamut
The dragon scales have to be held together by something and it’s probably metal links
I wanna put this in an adventure
depends on type and armour size
ask your DM
I wonder if this will be updated in a future book to include gem dragon resistances
It is officially made of only organic materials so a druid can wear this. Dragon scales are as hard if not harder than some metals.
Wish we could like comments.
What’s this thing’s price?
Would to see if I could get the nice dragon scales by talking and the others by stealth or combat to see if I could get one for each scale. Maybe make a shield and sword out out of some and as an artificer enchant them. Even add some to my cannon or servent.
So what is the rate that dragon organically shed their scales? How much shed would you need to make this armor?
All the money
Jokes aside, 5,000 gp to 50,000 gp
Seriously though, three second search, on the search engine of your choice, would answer so, so many questions I see floating around on the internet
Dragon scales are not metallic. Even the case of metallic dragons, "metallic" refers to the appearance of the scales, their property to reflect light like metal would.
