You can use a bonus action to toss this magic sword into the air and speak the command word. When you do so, the sword begins to hover, flies up to 30 feet, and attacks one creature of your choice within 5 feet of it. The sword uses your attack roll and ability score modifier to damage rolls.
While the sword hovers, you can use a bonus action to cause it to fly up to 30 feet to another spot within 30 feet of you. As part of the same bonus action, you can cause the sword to attack one creature within 5 feet of it.
After the hovering sword attacks for the fourth time, it flies up to 30 feet and tries to return to your hand. If you have no hand free, it falls to the ground at your feet. If the sword has no unobstructed path to you, it moves as close to you as it can and then falls to the ground. It also ceases to hover if you grasp it or move more than 30 feet away from it.

Can the Dancing Sword attack a creature that the attuned character can't see? Here's the scenario: We were battling invisible water creatures that were illuminated with Faerie Fire, but then the Faerie Fire went away and the invisible creatures were once again invisible, but one of my allies was restrained by the creature. I had been stabbing in the dark next to my ally, hoping to hit the creature; is it Kosher to have my Dancing Sword do the same? Or is it unable to attack the invisible creature because I am no longer able to see it?
The first time I read this item description, after the first Bonus Action to activate it, I thought the Sword attacked automatically as long as you remained within 30ft if it, it's done less than 4 attacks and it has a targeted enemy. Then you just use the Bonus Action to retarget it until it gets 4 attacks. But everywhere I see people say it uses a bonus action each turn to attack. Is that correct?
To me, there's a lot of wording that implies it auto-attacks a target you specify.
To me, the bolded text all implies it's doing things automatically and you have to use a Bonus Action to change what it's doing, not to make it do everything. It doesn't explicitly say you have to use a BA to make it attack every turn to me, just to move it and retarget.
Also, some people have said it's just a Magic Item version of Spiritual Weapon, but that specifies:
That is not the same wording as Dancing Sword and implies you use it every turn directly. Dancing Sword specifies that you use a BA to move and part of that BA you can make an attack. That's not the same thing to me. Spiritual Weapon also directly says you make a Melee Spell Attack, whereas Dancing Sword says it makes the attack with your ability scores + modifiers.
All of this just makes me think it's an auto-attacking item you retarget.
Am I wrong? Does anyone else see what I'm saying, or am I way off-base.
i can see what your saying but i wouldn't rule it that way
Could I use a divine smite while the weapon is flying? It is a melee attack but it‘s not in my hand.
This thing does NOT have a weight limit and the attack after move is optional. I can ride a flying sword like a metal surfboard? If so awesome.
I'm a little confused, if I use this weapon and have it attack a creature as my bonus action do I have to use a bonus action every turn for it to attack or does it automatically attack the same creature?
I'm looking forward to some Vicious Mockery while my sword is 30 ft away doing the dirty work!
You have to use a bonus action.
Bonus Action every turn for it to attack.
Unfortunately no, the sword is making the attack, not you attacking with the sword. Therefore it doesn't benefit from class features such as divine smite, sneak attack, or the warlocks life drinker invocation.
can you use this to fly like can you throw it and then ride it like a skate board and if someone manages to catch it what would you have to make to get it free
this damn thing is absolutely useless at this point in my game due to how high the dm puts the ac for enemies
and the reson i want wone of theese fr my charachter is that requierment couse you can just say smite or whatever word but smites the coolest fr this weapon and it just flies again making it just extra damadge in the form of a weapon aka the most op thing someone can think of im suprised this isnt some meta weapon.
use a duplacation spell on it and have fun lol
saying this rn the best looking version of this wepon if u had multiple would be a rapier version just imagine it
Can't wait to give this to a dhampir pc with serious daddy issues
there is nothing there for it needing to reset after it finishes the 4 attacks, other than return to your hand. So if you had multiple you just have to stagger activation and throw it back out after it comes back.
DEEZ NUTZ
Eventually, I'm going to play my College of Swords Bard again and use one of these. But only so I can take Fighting Initiate and beat the piss out of someone with my hands while using this because I know how satisfying that's going to be. The himbo country bumpkin that dreams of being a hero quite literally just saying **** you and the horse you rode in on for getting in my friends' way sounds real fun.
I don't understand why this item is very rare. It basically extends your attack range by 30 feet, and gives you an extra attack.
