This very rare item was first created by clerics of Nerull as a way to better control undead. The problem with this item is that good aligned clerics are unable to control undead, but are able to turn or destroy them. When a good cleric of Pelor got hold of one of these foul items he was instructed by his god that it’s magic was useful, but must be redirected. As such, the cleric was able to make some small changes to the magic bound into the item, creating the Amulet of Undead. The amulet is made from the pelvic bone of a priest of either Nerull or Wee Jas that is carved into the shape of a small skull. The item is then imbued with power from a priest. The amulet provides benefits to cleric and non-clerics as follows:
Non-Cleric: The attuned wearer is able to turn Undead as a cleric two levels lower than the character's highest level.
Cleric: When the amulet in attuned to a cleric it provides significant enhancements to the Cleric's ability:
- The cleric gains an additional Channel Divinity that can only be used to turn undead
- An undead creature that is "destroyed" through a Turn Undead is not destroyed but is instead controlled by the cleric. The cleric can a number of undead CR equal to their cleric level x2. Any controlled undead that would exceed the CR limit are destroyed. Controlled undead can be destroyed at anytime as a bonus action or a turn undead reaction (which allows the cleric to destroy existing undead to make room for newly controlled undead).
- Can be used as a focus providing +1 necrotic damage to any cleric spell
Evil Clerics: The amulet imbues the attuned wearer following enhanced benefits
- Can Turn undead at 5 levels higher
- Can control a total CR worth of undead equal to cleric level x10
- Resistance to necrotic
- Vulnerability to radiant
Undead are controlled indefinitely, but controlled is lost if the amulet is taken off for more than 5 minutes or if the amulet is attuned to somebody new. When control is lost, undead under the control of good clerics are destroyed, if the cleric was neutral they revert to their unnatural state as if never controlled, and if evil they turn on the cleric in an attempt to exact revenge. Any undead released from the control of an Amulet of Undead will no longer be affected by the same amulet.
