Wondrous Item, artifact (requires attunement)

Despite its name, this fearsome weapon is a miniature homunculus housed within a gourd. When invoked, the homunculus emerges to decapitate an enemy within seconds. The gourd itself could also capture the souls of slain targets, thus preventing resurrection. If the homunculus takes any damage, both the homunculus and all its equipment are immediately destroyed. They reform magically within the gourd at the end of a short rest.

Random Properties. The Immortal Slaying Flying Dagger has these random properties.

  • 2 minor beneficial properties.
  • 1 major beneficial property.
  • 2 minor detrimental properties.
  • 2 major detrimental properties.

While attuned to the Immortal Slaying Flying Dagger, you can use your action to use one of the abilities below.

  • Invoke the Dagger. You speak a command word, and the miniature homunculus emerges from the gourd and attempts to decapitate one creature that you can see within 30 feet of you, moving with blinding speed. The targeted creature must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, the homunculus cuts off one of the creature's heads. The creature dies if it can't survive without the lost head. A creature is immune to this effect if it is immune to slashing damage, doesn't have or need a head, has legendary actions, or the GM decides that the creature is too big for its head to be cut off by the homunculus. Such a creature instead takes 6d8 + 3 slashing damage from the hit.
  • Beckon the Soul. You beckon towards the gourd, inviting souls nearby to rest within. The souls of any creatures killed by you within the last minute are imprisoned in the gourd, and those creatures can only be restored to life by using a wish spell. There is no limit to the number of souls nor the length of time for which they can be held within the gourd. If the homunculus is dead, this ability cannot be used until the end of a long rest.

Curse. The Immortal Slaying Flying Dagger is cursed. Attuning to it curses you until you are killed in combat. While you are attuned to the artifact, you no longer require food, drink, or sleep. Instead, each day you must use the gourd to imprison the souls of 9 humanoid creatures minimum to gain the benefits of a long rest (you can only gain this benefit once per day). For each day you fail to imprison at least the minimum number of humanoid creature souls, you gain a progressive level of exhaustion. If you die while under this curse your soul is transformed into a demon on a random level of the Abyss. If you successfully imprison the souls of 9 humanoid creatures each day for 3 days in a row, you become an evil NPC under the control of the GM.
