Wondrous Item, artifact (requires attunement by a Artificer, Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock, or Wizard)

Lore

Also referred to in myth as "The Eye of the Heavens", this relic was crafted by the renowned and infamous wizard Akyviska Ikyekev. Legends document Akyviska as having an overzealous captivation of the night sky, spending months on end endlessly staring and cataloging the firmament. This device is one of several instruments she devised to record her findings, but observation turned to obsession. Finding that no apparatus could capture the heavens in all their splendor, with iniquitous magics she stole a fraction of the sky, sealing it inside this astrolabe. What was once used as a cartographer's tool for the stars instead became a prison for a fragment of the firmament, forever bound by her fanatical enthrallment.

Description

Akyviska's Astrolabe takes up 1 cubic foot of space and weighs 25lbs. The device has the rough shape of a sphere, with several gyroscopic rings of enchanted brass and silver surrounding a solid metal ball at the center. The center ball has metal shutters, and a seam on both sides that mimics the lids of an eye.

Mechanics

Akyviska's Astrolabe is a wondrous item that requires attunement. It has two states: Slumbering, and Awakened. Switching between these states requires a bonus action and must be held by the user. Regardless of the state the Astrolabe is in, its presence puts off creatures of evil alignment and is considered celestial.

Slumbering:

The Astrolabe returns to an inanimate state. All effects of the Astrolabe immediately end.

Awakened:

The rings of the Astrolabe begin to spin, and the center opens to reveal the stolen heavens within. Celestial magica floods out of the Astrolabe, filling the air with sparkling stars and astral mists; it is as if you are a titan in the cosmos, and stars no bigger than specks of dust.

When awakened, the Astrolabe effects a 10ft radial AoE. This zone is an anti-magic field, as all earthly magic is drowned out by the flood of pure celestial arcane. However, celestial magics can still be cast within and penetrate the boundaries of this field, and celestial creatures will recover 2d6 hit points each turn they remain inside it. The awakened Astrolabe also produces bright light in a 10ft radial AoE, and dim light out to 20ft.

When awakened, the Astrolabe is weightless and its user can command it to move to any unoccupied location within line of sight and within 30ft as a bonus action. Breaking line of sight or moving further than 30ft will cause the Astrolabe to begin slumbering.

Mechanics (Curse)

The item is also cursed, forcing the first creature that touches it to attune to it and preventing attunement to other items so long as it remains attuned. Each time the Astrolabe is awakened by the user, they must make a DC 8 Will save or risk being stunned, transfixed by its enthralling beauty. The DC increases by +1 at the start of every night the Astrolabe remains attuned, and reduces by -1 each night one is not attuned to it (but no lower than its starting value). Its user will, over time, become covetous of it, as what is more valuable than a shard of the heavens?
