This plate mail is made from the chitinous plates of an Ankheg rather than steel. It is lighter and more flexible than normal plate armor, but far more difficult to craft. Due to its lower weight and greater flexibility, it allows up to a +2 Dexterity Modifier to the wearer's armor class and only requires 13 Strength to move at full speed while wearing.
Additionally, as this armor is made from the acid-spitting ankheg's carapace, any effect which would damage or destroy the armor originating from acid, corrosion, or similar qualities are rolled at disadvantage (or the wearer rolls with advantage if rolling to resist the effect), and it is immune to effects which only apply to metallic objects, having no metal used in its construction. However, in spite of its mild resistance to acid, it is not so potent as to be impervious, nor is it resistant enough to yield additional defensive benefits to its wearer by its material, alone.
Plate consists of shaped, interlocking metal plates to cover the entire body. A suit of plate includes gauntlets, heavy leather boots, a visored helmet, and thick layers of padding underneath the armor. Buckles and straps distribute the weight over the body.
