Wondrous Item, rare

This bag initially appears to look like a regular bag or bag of holding, but upon closer inspection, the bag will appear to be moving and is slightly warm to the touch. While leathery in appearance, the bag is soft and velvety to the touch much like a hairless cat or naked molerat. This bag is, in fact, a living creature. It is counted as a tiny living construct with 20 Hit Points, and an Armor Class of 18. While it has no eyes, it has blindsight out to 30 ft. but is blind beyond that distance. It is unable to communicate or speak on its own, but it can understand Common and can be understood with the Speak with Animals spell. It can only communicate very basic thoughts and ideas, as it has no formal language of its own.

While it does physically breathe, it does not require high oxygen environments and can enter a dormant state for days, months, or even sometimes years to survive. It does not require food in the traditional sense but will eat rust if it is presented to it.

It has a Constitution of 12, an Intelligence and Wisdom score of 3, a Strength of 4, a Dexterity of 3, and a Charisma score of 5. It has a land speed of 1 ft. which it accomplishes by slowly rolling or giggling, much like an ooze or gelatinous cube might move. It has no swim or fly speed.

The bag's opening is considered a mouth for the creature, and it has 3-5 rows of serrated teeth encircling the inner lip of the bag opening. When anything is placed in the opening, the bag will attempt to bite the thing in its mouth. It has a +4 to hit, and on a successful hit, it delivers 3 (1d4 +1) of damage. Occasionally the bag's teeth will get stuck on the thing it is biting, requiring a Strength check with a DC 14 to remove the bag.

The personality of the bag may vary from bag to bag. Most bag creatures of this type are weary of strangers, but if the bag is kept for long periods of time it may become fond of its owner(s), allowing them to place and retrieve items from within it without biting them. If the bag feels threatened, it will shake and tremble, and if given the opportunity it will attempt to move away from the threat.

These bags have a nearly infinite lifespan, but can be damaged and destroyed. The bag is immune to the conditions blinded, incapacitated, paralyzed, poisoned, prone, stunned, and exhaustion. Any damage sustained to the bag may be healed by the bag entering a dormant state of stasis for at least 8 consecutive hours. During this time nothing can be placed or removed from the bag, or the clock for the time needed to heal starts over. The bag can not be healed by healing spells or potions.

This bag has an interior space considerably larger than its outside dimensions, roughly 4 feet in diameter at the mouth and 5 feet deep. The bag can hold up to 600 pounds, not exceeding a volume of 80 cubic feet (4x4x5). The bag weighs 15 pounds, regardless of its contents. Retrieving an item from the bag requires an action.

If the bag is overloaded, pierced, or torn, it ruptures and is destroyed, and its contents are scattered in the Astral Plane. If the bag is turned inside out, its contents spill forth, unharmed, but the bag must be put right before it can be used again. Breathing creatures inside the bag can survive up to a number of minutes equal to 10 divided by the number of creatures (minimum 1 minute), after which time they begin to suffocate.

Placing a bag of holding inside an extradimensional space created by a handy haversack, portable hole, or similar item instantly destroys both items and opens a gate to the Astral Plane. The gate originates where the one item was placed inside the other. Any creature within 10 feet of the gate is sucked through it to a random location on the Astral Plane. The gate then closes. The gate is one-way only and can’t be reopened.
