Alchemy is commonly thought of as potions made by old lady's who live in the woods but it used to be much more. Alchemists used to have magical mediums that let them take non conventional ingredients to alter items, weapons, and the world around them
For example you can use your medium to take the light of a torch and imbue it into the glass of a lantern to make a lantern that will never go out, the torch you took the light from will still burn like a torch but it will no longer create light. This also applies to spells, you can take the freezing cold of an ice dagger and store that cold forever
takeing properties from spells does not change the outcome of the spell, spell properties work differently from natural properties, natural properties rely on multiple sources to exist, for example the heat from a fire relies on the quality of fuel, amount of oxygen and heat of the initial source to create heat. spells on the other hand are self sustainable and create their own properties. You can take the light from a magical fire and it will be dark for only a moment but because magic fire has no source and doesn't rely on anything but magic to stay lit it will quickly make more light because of the magic keeping it alive
You cannot take properties from yourself or any spells you cast, the ring bonds with you when you put it on and becomes one with you, if you try to take properties from your own magic or spells the ring will reject them and nothing will happen. Attempting to take a property from yourself or your own magic doesn't use up any charges it just doesn't work
The uses of your medium scales 1-1 with your level, if you are level 7 you can take non conventional properties like torch light, the sound of wind, or a dragons pride 7 times a day. However everything you have collected in your medium can be used as many times as you want like a cantrip, so if you have a giant collection of these properties you can use them as many times as you want until you use up all the properties you have collected, however once you use use one of your collected properties you will have to a charge of your medium to collect it again so be careful not to loose your most valuable properties forever
You do not have to only use these properties to power up your weapons and spells you can also use these properties to change the world around you, you could use the heat from a plasma ball to melt a wall blocking a hidden room or the wind from a hurricane on a brick wall to dis lodge the bricks and attack a nearby enemy
Ps: in order to use the ring to its fullest potential the players will have to sacrifice one of their arms, they do not have to do this but if they do then the ring will be more powerful
When you put the ring on the ring will speak to you in your mind, it will ask you if you will sacrifice something of personal value in order to gain power, if the player agrees then the ring will take on a liquid state and cover their entire arm or equivalent to an arm depending on their race. Once the ring has covered the entire arm it will instantly absorb the arm and replace it with a bronze artificial arm. The ring becomes your new arm or racial equivalent of an arm and functions just like a normal arm exept you can now use your new ring arm as your medium. This sacrifice gives you a +2 to your natural AC, +2 to your un armed strike dmg, and doubles the amount of uses for the medium for example at level 5 you will be able to use the ring to take properties 10 times before having to wait until they recharge at sunrise
talk to your dm what you both agree the ring can store this item is in its early stages so what exactly it can store is up to you and your dm
Notes: The alchemists medium can be used as a spell casting focus you can add collected properties to your spells to give them an extra power boost, however doing this requires using an action and a bonus action, one for casting the spell and another for adding something to the spell., Sacrificing their dominant arm or just putting it on, Control, Shapechanging, Handwear, Sentient, Focus
