"A bloody red gem sits atop the dusty desk
It shines under the flickering, unstable fire lights
A glimpse in the past, tormented soul trapped in eternal suffering
And a promise for the future, of power and corruption"
The Artificial Philosopher's Stone has 3 charges that can be used to substitute any material component while spellcasting, including those that have gold cost.
If the last charge is used, roll a d20. In a 20, one charge is restored. In any other result, the stone is destroyed. If the result is a 1, a portal to a pocket dimension is created and everything in a 20 feet radius is sucked in. If there's a creature inside the radius, it can make a DC 20 Dexterity Saving Throw to escape. The contents of the pocket dimension are defined by the DM.
A creature attuned to the stone can do a one hour ritual to restore it one charge. The ritual process requires concentration, the spend of a 3rd level spell slot and the sacrifice of one unwilling humanoid.
Notes: by a spellcaster, Creation, Buff, Utility, Consumable, Eldritch Machine
