This item consists of a small wooden chest and a leather bandolier. The chest is made from an ebony wood and is a clad in a dark silver metal. There is a strong latch on the front of the chest but no lock. The bandolier is made of a black leather inscribed with silver runes with four spots that can each hold a small vial.
Opening the box reveals alchemical equipment-bottles, vials, knives, mixers, burners, saws, magnify glasses, etc. The box acts like a bag holding - it holds much more alchemical equipment than the size of the box should, but it will not hold other things.
In the chest is a particular glass jar a few inches tall. It is decorated with runes and writings carved into the glass and inlaid with silver. In the jar is a small winged creature. This is a Homunculus. By spending an hour using the ritual carved in Common on the jar, the ritual caster becomes the Homunculus's master, as defined in the Monster Manual.
When you use equipment from the box to inspect a creatures corpse, you will find 1d4+1 small materials imbued with the power of a creature. You can use the equipment to gather this material. Materials stored in the Chest do not degrade, but outside the chest, they degrade to unless 1 hour.
You can brew potions for the Homunculus using the equipment from the box and the harvested material. A potion brewed has a "level" of 1/2 the CR of the creature or plant harvested to get the material from anything without a CR have a level 1/4.
Once a potion is brewed, it must be placed in one of the available slots in the bandolier. After a number of hours equal to the level of the potion, the potion gains its magic. A potion must remain in its bandolier to keep its magic. A potion removed from the bandolier for more than a minute loses all magic.
Using an action, You can feed a potion to the Homunculus. When you do this, The Homunculus transforms into a form similar to the source of the materials the potion was made from, For 1 hour.
When transformed, The Homunculus gains half the physical abilities of the source of the potion. The Homunculus loses all its actions and gains the physical actions of the Potion's source, with all damage halved. Armor class, attack bonuses saving throw modifiers, spell save DC, and other modifiers based on Strength, Dexterity or Consititutions are changed to the Average between the Homunculus's and the potion's source, Rounded up.
The Homunculus doesn't gain spell casting, abilities based on Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma Or other mental abilities.
The Homunculus also changed in size, Growing or shrinking to one size category small than the potion's source.
Which effects are gained by the Homunculus are ultimately the Dm's discretion.
If the Homunculus takes enough damage to reduce it to zero hitpoints, It reverts to its normal form. The Homunculus can also revert to its natural form by using its bonus action.
When it reverts to its normal form, the Homunculus returns to the number of hit points it had before it transformed. If it reverts as a result of dropping to 0 hit points, It ignores that damage.
If killed, the Homunculus vanishes into mist and reappears within the jar inside the chest. The ritual must be re-cast to summon it again.
