Wondrous Item, rare (requires attunement by a a character with at least a combined 3 levels in artificer, bard, ranger, and rouge)

This swarm of microscopic spiders looks like a blob of gray goo from a distance, but close examination will reveal it to be miniature clockwork spiders. The swarm has 20 hit points, each representing 100 spiders. These hit points cannot be increased or healed in any way except through a long rest. The swarm can assume one of three forms, and the form that the spiders take can be changed with an action.

  • Assist: While in this form, the nanobots can morph themselves to assist you in tasks. The nanobots can take the form of any set of artisans tools or thieves tools. While making an ability check that uses a tool or conducting an investigation check, you may expend up to 4 of the swarm’s hit points before learning the results of this roll. Each hit point expended will give you an additional +1 to the skill check.
  • Scout: While in this form, the nanobots can be controlled remotely. The nanobots cannot act independently from you, but you can use your own actions to control them if they are within 120ft. As an action you can replace your senses with the nanobots, becoming blind and deaf as your vision and hearing is replaced by the swarm’s until the start of your next turn. The swarm is a small ooze with darkvision of 60ft, a walking speed of 30ft, an AC of 12, and the ability to move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. The swarm's saves are made with no modifier, however it shares your modifiers for skill checks. It cannot make attacks. While the nanobots are in this form, they can only change their form while you are within 5ft of them.
  • Defense: While in this form, the nanobots crawl along your body, protecting you from damage. When you take damage, you may use your reaction to have the nanobots gather at the point of impact, protecting you from the attack. The nanobots take this damage instead, however if this damage reduces the nanobots to 0 hit points, you take any remaining damage.

When the swarm is reduced to 0 hit points, it is unusable, however a few nanobots will always remain, and will self replicate over the course of a long rest, returning to 20 hit points.
