This weapon began its life as a humble standard issue axe in the 420th trench infantry brigade. The 420th was a prison brigade from the southern megachamber, they came from the criminal class of extremely poor farmers in the uncut coastal jungles of the kingdom Vidako. Most of the brigade had been busted in one way or another in relation to the flourishing glip and bugg trades out of the region as high arcanactivity levels coupled with dense vegetation and arable land make the perfect conditions for farming the mutated plant matter and insect matter needed for the narcotics. The men of the brigade had grown up wielding field axes, clearing jungle for glip farms, tearing away rotten bark to gather insects, and of course chopping up defaulting debtors bodies for untraceable disposal. The small company contracted to outfit the brigade saw this as an opportunity. The better their outfitted brigade did, the more likely they were to score the more lucrative contracts for sky fortresses and other vehicle design. So Zephyr Industries, a local outfit of beastly races and humans designed the Vidako trench axe. The design of the axe itself features a single broad edge with a ration opening tool integrated, the backside of the axe was a blunt and dull counterweight to aid with alignment while throwing, and to facilitate digging without blunting the axe head. The handle was wood sourced from Vidako and the insignia on the blade is an antiquated version of the Zephyr Industries logo, which is now used as a morale patch for any Vidakan brigade.
While on their first tour of duty, the 420th brigade was attached to the Enkeli Empire's 9th Legion as a forward softening and harassment force. The 9th was a legion comprised mostly of mid to lower class warrior clergy of the Faith of Martyrdom which is popular among Aasamir, high elves, and humans. The enemies that the Legion was fighting were commanded by Necromancer Alhoons who raise undead armies of slaughtered greenskins and arm them with arcanactivity ray weapons. To effectively combat these foes, the legion set to annointing the service issued arms of the 420th so that the undead greenskins would come to fear them. There were even rumors that some of the 420th, driven mad by their visions of violence and by too many exposures to arcanactivity weapons used Vidakan jungle voodoo blood curses to further enchant their weapons.
Nearly 2 years later and after one of the most terrifying campaigns ever witnessed outside the Gates of Gul, the 8th Legion ended that campaign victorious. They returned home to the Enkeli Empire to olive branches and laurels, but to the 420th it was a pyrrhic victory as only 118 of the original 8000 men returned home, most of whom had gone mad. Nonetheless, the Enkeli Empire did offer non-voting citizenship status to the veterens of the 420th, effectively freeing them in the eyes of the Grand War Consulate.
