This old, well-worn, shield has seen its fair share of adventure and combat alike. After being hung on the mantle of the Angharradh House of Healing for centuries, retired from combat altogether, it bore witness to the aging, gain, and loss of life. After hundreds of years of this magical exposure to both life and death, as well as the spells that harnessed them, the shield became intertwined with these energies altogether. While holding this shield, you have a +1 bonus to AC. This bonus is in addition to the shield's normal bonus to AC.
When a humanoid creature dies within 30 feet of you while wielding the Aegis of Life, you can use your reaction to capture a portion of their soul. When consumed, the creature's name is magically engraved on the rim of the shield, which can not exceed a maximum of ten names.
When you or a friendly creature within 30 feet of you take damage, you may use your reaction to expel one or more named souls from the Aegis. For each expended name, you may decrease the damage by 1d12+1 per soul. After calling forth a name, it ignites in holy flame and slowly fades away immediately after. Alternatively, you may cast any necromancy spell, such as gentle repose or revivify, on a name, treating it as a direct connection to the corpse and spirit of the original creature. Any spells cast this way consume spell slots as normal.
If you die with less than 10 names imbued in the Aegis of Life, your soul is captured within the shield as well.
Shields require the Utilize action to Don or Doff. You gain the Armor Class benefit of a Shield only if you have training with it.
Notes: Bonus: Armor Class, Combat, Warding
