This ring is the first magical item created by an upstart sorcerer, Q'Val Callum. And to warn you, he had some emotional baggage that may have seeped in. While you either hold or wear this ring, it will examine your magical ability, determining whether you are worthy to be awarded the ring's full gift.
Prestidigitation For The Cool Kids
Passing the ring's test (you must be able to normally cast at least one 1st-Level spell without the aid of others or any items):
Congratulations, you have been found worthy! You feel pretty good about yourself. In fact, if not for the sheer depth of your humility, you can certainly see how someone (not you, of course) could feel a little superior to those who can't cast magic (surely anyone but you would understandably feel this way about them). But you're a mage far too magnanimous to think such thoughts.
While either holding or wearing this ring, you are able to cast the spell Prestidigitation at will, fully as intended...but your ego may experience some swelling.
Prestidigitation For Washouts
Failing the ring's scrutiny, you feel a sense of mocking judgment wash over you as if someone is calling you a mundane pleb and saying, "I'd be genuinely excited if you misplaced me forever that I might never deal with you again. But, alas! I shall never get over the embarrassment of being held by your talentless hands."
After each attempt to cast one of the spell's effects, you swear you can hear relentless heckling in the back of you mind.
While either holding or wearing this ring, you may cast a disappointingly watered-down version of Prestidigitation at will:
- After spending 1 minute concentrating on a candle, torch or campfire that has been set afire at least once before, you can instantaneously ignite or snuff it out. "Your parents must be so disappointed that you weren't just a stain between their bed sheets.'"
- After spending 1 minute concentrating on an object no larger than 1 cubic foot that is not being carried or worn by another creature, you can instantaneously clean or soil it… er, mostly anyway. "Seriously, the bar was set so low it was on the ground and yet you felt it fitting to grab a shovel!"
- You may chill or warm (only to a lukewarm temperature) or slightly flavor up to 1 cubic foot of nonliving material. The magic will not sustain any of these affects, so it will cool off or warm back up as normal. Additionally, the flavor will return to normal after 1 minute. "Bitter was the day you found me! Pray tell: as an outsider, what's your perspective on talent?"
- You make a color, a small mark, or a symbol appear on an object or a surface that is not being carried or worn by another creature. The affect you choose will disappear after 1 minute. "Much like you, that will never leave a lasting mark."
Additionally, you cannot have multiple effects at the same time from this spell on any one object, but you can have up to three of its non-instantaneous effects active at a time (each on a different object). You can dismiss such effects as an action.
