Wondrous Item, artifact (requires attunement by a bard, sorcerer, warlock, or wizard)

Aether, Robe of the Sorcerer King is made from exquisite silken cloth dyed a deep purple. Criss-crossing through the cloth are swirling lines of electric blue and arcane runes. This set of robes were crafted by ancient Nintherasil crafters for their first sorcerer king, Virgo Alventinus. The robe was passed down over generations until it ended up in the possession of Sybris Ehkam. She was so beloved by her people that instead of Aether being passed down to her successor she was buried in the robe.

It is said that Aether aided its wearer by providing arcane energy that could be used for additional spellcasting. In addition the arcane enchantments on Aether provided protection against attacks much in the fashion of armor and is said to have even been able to absorb some power from enemy spells cast on its bearer.

Aether, Robe of the Sorcerer King has 7 charges and regains 1d6 charges daily at dawn.

Spell Absorption. When you are targeted by an enemy's spell, you can use your reaction to have the robe swallow part of the spell, gaining a number of charges equal to the spell level of the triggering spell. You are still subject to whatever effects the spell would normally inflict on you. The ability cannot be used again until you finish a short or long rest.

Spell Eater. When using the robe's Spell Absorption ability, you gain resistance to one of the types of damage of that spell until the end of your next turn.

Arcane Battery. When casting a spell, you can expend charges to cast your spells instead of using spell slots. When using charges in this way 1 charge equals one spell slot level. You cannot cast spells using this feature of a higher level than you could normally cast using spell slots.

Arcane Replacement. When you are wearing this robe, you can expend charges to ignore material spell components. When using charges in this way you can ignore up to 50 GP worth of a material component per charge.

Arcane Armor. If you aren't wearing armor, your base Armor Class is 14 + your Dexterity modifier.

Arcane Resistance. You have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Aether, Robe of the Sorcerer King grants the following additional benefits:

  • While attuned to this artifact, you gain expertise in the Arcana skill.
