The shield hovers in your space to protect you as if you were wielding it, leaving your hands free. It can defend you and one ally that occupies a space adjacent to you.
You can change who the shield is defending during your turn or when the ally you were defending moves out of range. If the shield is only protecting you and an ally comes into defending range you may declare your defense of a new ally at that time but not as a reaction to an enemy attack. The ally you're choosing to defend gains +2 AC.
