Unlike any other sword, Negankerdak was not born from the flames of the forge. And its blade is not made of any kind of metal, not of mithril and not of adamantine. Negankerdak - its name means "Unforged" in the dwarven language - was formed by the world, Irna, herself at the dawn of creation, from a mysterious, pure and untamable material known as Black Diamond. Found by dwarves deep below underground, it served an important role in freeing their lands from the dark Vorda. Negankerdak's blade is dark like the night, but within it, a mysterious fire burns in various colors.
Black Diamond Blade. This magic longsword grants a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it. When you hit with an attack using it, the target takes an extra 2d8 radiant damage and 2d8 fire damage. In addition, when you target an object with the sword, the attack is an automatic critical hit.
Light of Negankerdak. The sword sheds bright light in a 5-foot radius and dim light for an additional 5 feet. Fiends find the sword's light disconcerting and painful, even if they can't see it, and are considered blinded while within the weapon's radius of bright light. In addition, any magical darkness within the weapon's radius of bright light is automatically dispelled. As a bonus action, you can intensify the sword's light, causing it to shed bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet, or reduce its glow to its normal intensity.
Lightcatcher. When moonlight or the light from within the world, Irna, hits the sword's blade, its light automatically intensifies and each creature of your choice within the sword's radius of bright light must make a DC 21 Constitution saving throw at the start of each of its turns, taking 2d8 radiant damage and 2d8 fire damage or half as much on a success. This effect ends when the sword is no longer exposed to this light.
Blessing of Mother Earth. The sword extends its connection to the earth it came from to you, granting you the following benefits:
- Earthen Language: You can speak, read and write Terran.
- Diamond Skin: You gain a bonus of +2 to your Armor Class and you are resistant to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage.
- Stone Endurance. Your Constitution score becomes 20 unless it already is 20 or higher.
- Tremorsense. You gain tremorsense out to a range of 60 feet.
Earth-Wrought Magic. While you are holding the sword, you can cast one of the following spells (save DC 21) either as an action or, when you take the attack action on your turn, in place of one of your attacks: bones of the earth, earthquake, erupting earth, wall of stone. Once a spell has been cast using the sword, that spell can't be cast from the sword again until the next dawn.
Random Properties. The sword has 2 minor beneficial properties, 1 major beneficial property and 1 minor detrimental property.
Sentience. Negankerdak is a lawful neutral weapon with an Intelligence of 12, a Wisdom of 10, and a Charisma of 16. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet. The weapon communicates telepathically with its wielder.
Personality. While Negankerdak was formed underground in eternal darkness, it wants to shine light upon the world, it wants to free it from darkness. It wants to be wielded by a warrior with honor, by one it deems worthy. While it was found by dwarves and thus kept in their underground vaults - until it got stolen - it sees its purpose not as the weapon wielded by a dwarf, but by members of other races to aid the dwarven people. Once it has found a worthy wielder, it will serve them loyally. If it finds itself in the hands of a creature who is not worthy though, that creature takes 2d8 radiant damage and 2d8 fire damage at the start of each of its turns until it drops the sword.
Destroying the Sword. Negankerdak cannot be destroyed by any means. It will disappear when the world, Irna, itself ends.
Disclaimer. This is my interpretation of Negankerdak, the sword featured in songs by Clamavi de Profundis.
