Weapon (longsword), artifact (requires attunement by a creature unsheathing the sword -- the attunement is instant)

Anubis is a magic, sentient longsword that grants a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it. It scores a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20, and deals an extra 4d8 magical slashing damage on a hit. You can also use your Dexterity instead of Strength for attack rolls and damage rolls when attuned.

If a creature is the first creature to have unsheathed Anubis in the past century, Anubis will serve them out of gratitute for freeing it. The sword will remain attuned to that creature, even if another creature unsheathes the sword. This creature gains a +2 to their Dexterity score.

If the creature that draws the sword is not the first creature to draw the sword within the past century, it must make a DC 24 Wisdom Saving Throw or fall under control of Anubis until they drop the sword or until it is sheathed. That creature cannot remove the sword from their possession willingly, unless the attuned creature or Anubis allow them to. This creature also accounts as attuned for any abilities that require it.

Stand. Anubis is a stand bound to a sword. This stand cannot manifest and cannot move the sword by itself. The stand can choose who is its' primary user will be, and override the previous method of choice if it sees it as necessary. The sword can also phase through an object without cutting it

Random Properties. Anubis grants the following random properties to the first creature that wields the sword within a century:

  • 2 minor beneficial property.
  • 1 major beneficial property.

As well as the following random properties to any subsequent creature that draws the sword after the initial creature:

  • 1 major beneficial property.
  • 1 major detrimental property.
  • 1 minor detrimental property.

Mid-Combat Evolution. Anubis evolves during combat, learning and memorizing their opponent's manuevers. If Anubis sees a creature take an action other than the Dodge, Disengage, Dash, or actions similar to that which are universal and vary in their methods of use, Anubis will memorize what that action consists of. If this action is repeated and requires an attack roll against the wielder of Anubis, that attack roll is at disadvantage. If a saving throw is required, the wielder makes that saving throw at advantage. For example, if a creature casts Fire Bolt after using it once before and targets Anubis' wielder, the attack roll will be at disadvantage. If a creature uses the same weapon to attack two rounds in a row that attack roll will also be at disadvantage.

During combat, the wielder of Anubis will also slowly grow in power. As long as you're actively attacking a creature or being attacked, this benefit will remain. If you go two rounds in a row without rolling an attack roll, taking damage, or making a saving throw this effect resets.

  • After 2 rounds the wielder will gain a +1 to their AC and their movement speed increases by 5 feet.
  • After 3 rounds the wielder will gain a +1 to all of their attack rolls and damage rolls (stacks with Anubis' attack roll bonus).
  • After 5 rounds the wielder will gain a +2 to their Dexterity score (maximum 22) which does affect their AC and their movement speed increses by another 5 feet.
  • After 6 rounds the wielder will gain another +1 to all of their attack rolls and damage rolls (stacks with previous) and they can take another attack with Anubis during their action (stacks with extra attacks).
  • After 7 rounds the wielder will gain another +1 to their AC and their movement speed increases by 10 feet.
  • After 9 rounds the wielder will gain another +2 to their Dexterity score (maximum 24).
  • After 10 rounds the wielder will gain another +1 to all of their attack rolls and damage rolls (stacks with previous), they can take another additional attack (stacks with previous), and their movement speed increases by another 10 feet.

Spells. While a creature is attuned to Anubis, they can use an action to cast one of the following spells (save DC 18) from it: Haste, Heroism, Enhance Ability (Can only grant Bear's Endurance, Bull's Strength, or Cat's Grace). All of these spells can only be cast on its' user. Anubis has 3 charges, and each of these spells cost 1 charge to cast. These charges reset at dawn.

Sentience. Anubis is a sentient chaotic neutral weapon with an Intelligence of 14, a Wisdom of 18, and a Charisma of 17. It has hearing and can see up to 60 ft.. It also has Darkvision up to 30 ft.

The weapon communicates telepathically with its wielder and can speak, read, and understand Common as well as any languages its' wielder knows.

Personality. The sword’s purpose is to serve whoever set it free, as well as to not be sheathed and locked away. It will prevent this in any way it can, even taking control of its' wielder. If Anubis chooses, it can also choose not to be drawn from its sheath.

Destroying the Sword. A creature attunned to Anubis willingly can choose to remove that attunement if Anubis allows it to. A creature unwillingly attuned is fully under the control of Anubis, therefore Anubis can choose when it is unattuned to that creature. The sword can be destroyed like any other sword, but unless the sword is melted down, completely disintegrated, or chopped into square pieces smaller than 1 millimeter, Anubis will still inhabit the largest part of the blade. Anubis can still control other creatures in this state if they pick up the blade. The sheath can also be destroyed by any method, preventing Anubis from being sheathed. However, a new sheath can still be made to sheath Anubis.

Proficiency with a Longsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Sap. If you hit a creature with this weapon, that creature has Disadvantage on its next attack roll before the start of your next turn.
