Wondrous Item, artifact

An highly experimental barrel attachment for a firearm that expels controlled bursts of compressed Aether to augment the power and velocity of the weapon's shots. An array of pipes covered in dials, valves and levers run from a cluster of small canisters to an elaborate muzzle brake. The whole device is designed to be attached and removed quickly and easily, though unresolved issues with heat regulation can make removing it difficult.

This item can be attached to or removed from a firearm as bonus action. While attached, the firearm becomes a +1 magic weapon that deals an additional 2d6 thunder damage. Add +2 to the weapon's misfire score while the barrel is attached.

Overheat: After making an attack that does not misfire, before rolling damage if the attack hits, roll a d100. On a roll of 70 or lower, the Aether Barrel gains 1 level of Overheat. At each level of Overheat, the weapon gains the following properties. These effects do not stack.

Overheat Level 1: +1d6 fire damage, misfire +1

Overheat Level 2: +2d6 fire damage, misfire +2

Overheat Level 3: +3d6 fire damage, misfire +3

Upon gaining a 4th level of Overheat, the weapon immediately breaks and cannot be used until it is fixed outside of combat. The wielder must also make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 12), taking 1d6+4 fire damage on a failed save.

Vent: While the weapon has levels of Overheat, the wielder can use an action to Vent the excess heat in a cone of magical, rainbow-colored flames from the barrel. This effect is identical to the Burning Hands spell cast at the level equal to the Overheat level of the weapon.

Vent save DC= 8+your proficiency bonus+your Dexterity modifier

Immediately after using Vent, the wielder must make a Tinker Tools check (DC 8+the weapon's current misfire score) to safely remove the Gauss Barrel. On a failure, the wielder must pass a Dexterity saving throw (DC 12) or take 1d6+the weapon's Overheat level as fire damage. The weapon breaks and cannot be used until it is fixed outside of combat. On a success, the barrel is safely removed, along with all of its effects, and the weapon can be used as normal.

Once removed, all levels of Overheat are lost. The Aether Barrel cannot be used again for 1 hour per level of Overheat it had before it was removed.

While attached, the Aether Barrel loses 1 level of Overheat every 10 minutes that pass without the weapon being fired.
