At the beginning of combat, the ketsin rolls a d30 four times, selecting bookmarks from this spell list according to the numbers rolled. If the same number is rolled twice, roll again until the numbers are distinct.
- Bookmark 1-4: Magic Missile (costs 3 Ichor). The magic missile spell, upcast to level 3.
- Bookmark 5-7: Scorcher (costs 4 Ichor). The aganazzar's scorcher spell, upcast to level 3.
- Bookmark 7-9: Fireball (costs 5 Ichor). The fireball spell.
- Bookmark 9-11: Erupting Earth (costs 6 Ichor). The erupting earth spell.
- Bookmark 11-13: Guiding Bolt (costs 3 Ichor). The guiding bolt spell, upcast to level 3.
- Bookmark 14: Chaos Vortex (costs 11 Ichor). Until the end of the ketsin's next turn, a ball of pulsating necrotic energy floats above the ketsin's head. If an enemy moves at least 5 feet within 15 feet of the ketsin, the ball makes a ranged spell attack as an immediate reaction: +5 to hit, range 15 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4 + 2) necrotic damage.
- Bookmark 15: Black Hole (costs 11 Ichor). Until the end of the ketsin's next turn, a miniature black hole floats in an unoccupied space within 30 feet of the ketsin. This black hole draws all of the ketsin's magical attacks towards its center, provided the ketsin was within 50 feet of the black hole when the spell was cast. Enemies within 5 feet of the black hole treat the area as difficult terrain.
- Bookmark 16-17: Chromatic Orb (costs 3 Ichor). The chromatic orb spell, upcast to level 3.
- Bookmark 18: Spear of Destiny (costs 9 Ichor). The ketsin targets one creature it can see; at the end of their next turn, a massive spear falls from the sky onto their head, making a ranged spell attack: +9 to hit, range sight, one target. Hit: 32 (5d8 +10) piercing damage, and the target is knocked prone.
- Bookmark 19: Ichor Spring (costs 1 Ichor). The ketsin's Ichor is fully replenished. This spell cannot be cancelled.
- Bookmark 20: Retooling (costs 2 Ichor). The ketsin discards all currently bookmarked spells and gains 4 new ones (if applicable). This spell cannot be cancelled.
- Bookmark 21: Autotool (costs 4 Ichor). For one minute, whenever the ketsin cast a spell from the Grimoire, that spell is immediately refilled by another randomly determined spell. This spell cannot be cancelled.
- Bookmark 22-24: Lightning Bolt (costs 5 Ichor). The lightning bolt spell.
- Bookmark 25-27: Shatter (costs 4 Ichor). The shatter spell, upcast to level 3.
- Bookmark 28: Reduce Ichor Overflow (costs 6 Ichor). For one minute, all spells cost 1/2 as much Ichor, rounded up. This spell cannot be cancelled.
- Bookmark 29: Vitriolic Sphere [Don't] (costs 10 Ichor). The vitriolic sphere spell, cast at level 4. Until the end of the ketsin's next turn, its armor class decreases by 2, and it makes saving throws at disadvantage.
- Bookmark 30. Experimental Rip (costs 4 Ichor). A random spell effect from this list occurs. This spell cannot be cancelled.
A ketsin can only bookmark four spells at a time. After a spell has been cast from the Grimoire, it is discarded, and cannot be cast again until all 30 bookmarked spells have been cast. (It might be useful if the DM uses a deck of cards to simulate choosing random spells.) Certain spells can be cancelled, meaning that the ketsin can take an additional action for free afterwards. Every cancel costs 1 Ichor. The following cancel chains are allowed:
- Spell -> Spell. This can be repeated until the ketsune runs out of usable spells.
- Spell -> Tool.
- Spell -> Ichor Flow
- Spell -> Antimatter Object.
- Spell -> Reindexing.
- Ichor Flow -> Tool (provided no spells were used first).
The Grimoire has 50 hit points, an AC of 18, and resistance to all damage except poison and psychic, which it is immune to. It weighs 10 pounds, but can hover (so long as it is within 10 feet of its ketsin). The ketsin can teleport the Grimoire to their hands as a free action.
