Wondrous Item, rare (requires attunement by a wizard)

This thick book is bound in dark leather, crisscrossed with inlaid silver lines suggesting a map or chart. When found, the book appears to be a typical wizard’s spell book. It contains the following wizard spells, which can be copied from the book using the normal rules: arcane gate, dimension door, gate, misty step, plane shift, and teleportation circle. A seventh spell is also present but is incomprehensible. The rest of the book’s pages are blank, and you can transcribe your own spells into the book.

Once you attune to the book, it gains the following attributes:

  • While you are holding the book, you can use it as a spellcasting focus for your wizard spells.
  • The book functions as if it were your spell book, allowing you to prepare the six spells it came with without needing to copy them into another spell book. You can copy these spells out of the book as if copying your own spell book.
  • The seventh spell is revealed as a special version of word of recall that can be prepared by a wizard. You must meet all other requirements of the spell. This is magically granted knowledge that cannot be copied into another spell book nor scribed on to a scroll.

Additionally, the book has 3 charges, and it regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn. You can use the charges in the following ways while holding it:

  • If you spend 1 minute studying the book, you can expend 1 charge to replace one of your prepared wizard spells with a different spell in the book. The new spell must be of the conjuration school.
  • When you are hit by an attack, you can use your reaction to expend 1 charge to teleport up to 10 feet to an unoccupied space you can see. If your new position is out of range of the attack, it misses you.

At the DM's discretion, spells added to the book may become part of the magic of the Atlas. If they do, ancient versions of these tomes may become unique, legendary items of tremendous power, granting wizards instantaneous access to a wealth of magical knowledge.

If the DM rules otherwise, any spells added to the book slowly fade once a wizard's attunement is broken, disappearing completely after 30 days unless that wizard re-attunes the book. Nothing else can prevent this process. If another wizard finds an Atlas with lingering additional spells, these spells can be copied using the rules for copying from a spell scroll. The spells disappear in the attempt, same as with spell scrolls. None of the other magic of the book applies to any spells added to it by another wizard.
