Wondrous Item, unknown rarity (requires attunement by a creature of fiend or devil lineage)

This pendent has a dark blood ruby gem, found deep beneath the earth in caverns and mines, incased in a black onyx or obsidian clawed cage on a black chain, is known to have the unique magical property of holding the souls of humanoids. When a soul is filled by a soul the ruby gem becomes completely opaque. This soul pendent can only hold one soul at a time.

After killing a humanoid creature you may spend an action on your next turn to attempt to trap it's soul in the pendent. The creature must make a CON saving throw vs. your spell DC. If it succeeds on the save, the attempt fails and their soul is free. On a failed save, their soul becomes trapped until you expend it in one of the ways described below.

Once a soul is trapped inside the gem you can use an action for one of the following effects.

  • Release. You can release the soul from the gem. You gain temporary hit points equal to that creatures CR lvl. (Treat CR's less than 1 as 1). Once the soul is released it may depart the material plane for it's after life, or it may be trapped on the material plane as a Specter or other CR appropriate undead. (DM's Choice). 
  • Spell Slot Recovery. Note the CR rating of the creature whose soul is within the gem (Treat CR's less than 1 as 1). you can expend the soul within the gem to recover a level of spell slots equal to CR of the soul inside the gem. For example if the gem holds the soul of a CR 3 creature, you could regain one 1st level slot, and one 2nd level slot, or just one 3rd level slot. Only spell slots 6th level and lower can be restored in this way.
  • Vitality. Note the CR rating of the creature whose soul is within the gem (Treat CR's less than 1 as 1). You can expend the soul within the gem to regain hit points. For every one CR of the creature inside the gem you gain a bonus to the roll. Roll 1d8 + (CR lvl) to determine the number of recovered HP. For example if the gem holds the soul of a CR 3 creature you would recover 1d8 + 3 HP. At 5th level this goes to 2d8 + (CR lvl), 10th 3d8 + (CR lvl), and 15th 4d8 + (CR lvl).
  • Give Life. You can expend the soul within the gem to be used as the material component in the Raise Dead, Resurrection, and True Resurrection spells. The CR level of the soul must be equal to or greater than the level of spell being used. For example if the gem holds the soul of a CR 5 creature then it can be used for the Raise Dead (5th lvl) spell, but could not be used for Resurrection (7th lvl) spell, or True Resurrection (9th lvl) spell. 

Once a soul is used in one of the above ways, the Soul Pendent can not be used again till after a long rest is completed. When the soul is expended in one of the above ways (except for being released) the soul is destroyed and can not exist on any plane, and the creature whose soul it belongs to cannot be revived by anything short of a Wish spell.
