Made generations ago of black steel caste from the heavens these sentient blades exhibit a thirst to defend the material realms from creatures of the hells they can be carried only by the most honorable and incorruptible..to the point they have been known to give their bearers a sharp warning or outright death for dishonor. Carrying in themselves the memories of bearers come before to aid their current bearer in their tasks. The tails of their saga etched in runes along its blade. A new one added for each bearer or in some cases, some epic battle or event. The longer a bearer is with the sword, the more it will aid its current bearer as runes activate.
An Ancestor Blade passes from bearer to bearer, choosing a new bearer and remaining bonded to that person for life or until dishonor separates them. If the bearer dies, the sword lies dormant until it accepts a new bearer, often bonding itself closely to a family line, an order, or great house. Those who are dishonorable or of the hells who touch it will face attack from the sword itself. Those who fail it's test to attune face the same.
An Ancestor Blade serves only one master at a time. It may be collected by those who wish to guard it if handled carefully and with respect less it lash out. Those who wish to attune need merely grasp the sword by the hilt and speak to it provided the previous bearer no longer lives. The sword may reject this attunement and lash out of its own accord with deadly consequences.
An Ancestor Blade won’t serve anyone it regards as craven, dishonorable, unlawful, or tied to the hells. If the blade rejects you, it will lash out. If the blade accepts you, you become attuned to it and a new rune appears on the blade. You remain attuned to the weapon until you die or the weapon is destroyed.
An Ancestor Blade has one rune on its blade for each master it has served (typically 1d6 + 1). The first rune always grants a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls. Each rune beyond the first grants the blade an additional property. The DM chooses each property or determines it randomly using the table below. Properties beyond the first become activated gradually, at the DM's discretion, the longer the blade is wielded. (IE, to increase the weapons power in lieu of obtaining a newer weapon)
Sentience
An Ancestor Blade is a sentient neutral good weapon with an Intelligence of 12, a Wisdom of 10, and a Charisma of 12. It has hearing and Truesight out to a range of 120 feet.
The weapon communicates by transmitting emotions or thoughts, or by signaling the bearer it has more complex things to convey. It can communicate more explicitly, through visions or dreams, when the wielder is focused, in a trance, or asleep.
Personality
Every Ancestor Blade seeks to defend the material plane from the hells and secondarily to uphold the law and honor. It's bearer must remain lawful and honorable lest the blade remind or kill it's bearer.
The weapon is bonded to the bearer it is meant to serve. Once it has bonded with an owner who shares its ideals, its loyalty is absolute.
Hexblade
As this is a sentient weapon choosing it's bearer, those who wish to attune to this blade must take a minimum one level of Hexblade when they arm themselves with this weapon.
