Wondrous Item, very rare

This was created by a traveler from the abyssal plane of existence as they looked to capture magic to use in their plane that they could not get. There is risk here to the wielder of the needle, if the magic is too powerful there is risk that they are unable to channel the spell and it may hurt them too!

A pure silver needle embedded within a quartz vial seemingly a single piece upon inspection. A similar silver plunger is affixed to the top within the vial similarly and prevents it to be removed (upon inspection). It otherwise is not notable unless it has been used. For an empty vial you can “withdraw” magic from any sorcerer or inherently magical creature upon sticking the creature with the needle and lifting the plunger, which will pull out magical energy. It has no effect on any other creature and will only draw blood.

In order to determine what spell is taken roll a dice equal to the spells the character has and match the number of the dice to the spell in the list of the slot. The spell level of the magic in the vial is equal the highest spell slot of the character. When drawing magic from a valid creature the DM rolls an additional 1d20, less than a 5 the creature loses the spell slot permanently, otherwise they regain it after a long rest. The DM will also roll a dice equal to the total spell slot level of the creature. The vial will capture a spell from the spell slot level at the DM’s discretion.

When a player injects the vial they need to make an arcana check, DC 11+spell level. On a success the player is able to use the spell as desired, on a failure the player takes 2d12+6 force damage and the spell effect is left up to the DM.

Additional flavor options:

  1. If a character hits 0 as a result of using this needle you could have them become the spell or some kind of elemental form of magic as a last act
  2. If you want to make it harder on the spell caster you can make it that they need two long rests to recover the spell slot(s).
