The Abyssal Conduit, a scepter of black obsidian crowned with a malevolent purple orb, radiates an aura of volatile, virulent corruption.
While attuned to this item, you may cast the contagion spell once per long rest.
Cursed Item:. When you attempt cast the contagion spell, after declaring your intended target, roll 2d6. If the rolled d6s do not match, the contagion spell is cast as normal.
If the rolled d6s match, the Abyssal Conduit pulses with power and discharges an a blast of pestilent energy into both you and the target. You do not cast the contagion spell. Rather, both you and the target are immediately afflicted with an effect from the contagion spell, bypassing the melee spell attack and constitution saving throws typically associated with the contagion. You do not choose the disease; rather, it is determined by the matching d6s:
- Blinding Sickness
- Filth Fever
- Flesh Rot
- Mindfire
- Seizure
- Slimy Doom
While the effects are the same as the disease from the contagion, this effect on the caster is considered to be part of the weapon's curse and not a disease, and thus cannot be cured with spells such as Lesser Restoration. Following a long rest, you may roll a CON save against your own spellcasting save DC. On a success, you are able to shake off the deleterious effects of the curse. Add +1 to your CON save for every consecutive day you failed to shake off the curse (e.g. if on day 3 of being cursed you have failed 2 saves, you would get a +2 to your CON save). If you are afflicted by more than one of these effects at the same time, all are removed with a successful save. Shaking off the contagion effects of the curse in this way does not break your attunement to the item.
If you are suffering one or more of the effects of the contagion curses, and use magical means to end/break the curse (e.g. remove curse, greater restoration), in addition to losing the contagion effect(s), you unattune from the Abyssal Conduit and must make a CON 15 saving throw. On a success, you are able to force the magical energy from the curse back into the item. On a fail, the Abyssal Conduit shatters in your hand, dealing 6d8 poison damage to creatures within 10 feet, and is destroyed. Note that this save only occurs if you break your attunement while suffering from the contagion effect curse. Breaking your attunement in this way while not affected by a contagion effect does not trigger the CON save.
