An Athame is a double-bladed ceremonial knife, usually with a black handle, that is used to direct energy in Witchcraft. Traditionally, it can be used to cast a circle and is used to carve a doorway into circles as well.
Not to be confused with a bolline - which is a white-handled knife used for practical purposes, like cutting herbs. Athames are more of a ritual tool - imagine it as the sharper, darker counterpart to the wand in practicality, if you like. If you’re a kitchen witch or practicality is close to your heart, you can, of course, use an athame that doubles as a bolline, provided you treat it with as much respect as a ritual tool deserves (keeping it on the altar, charging and cleansing it, etc).
They are kept on the right side of the altar. When creating sacred water during the Full Moon or other occasions, the athame may be used to spoon and stir salt into the water and direct power into it. Purify them by exposing them to all four elements - sprinkle with salt water for Earth and Water, pass through incense smoke for Air, and quickly warm the blade in a candle flame for Fire - and seal the magic with a knot tied in string or a ribbon of your personal power choice of colour. If you’re unsure of which colour to use, try black. You can anoint the handle with a diluted essential oil (try sandalwood for power, or your master oil), and tie a charm of wisdom (such as a small owl) on the end of the knotted string if you like.
Athames should generally be stored and displayed point-down, or pointing toward the South. If not, you should have a clear reason for doing so! Almost all sources state that magickal tools should not be used for any other purpose than that for which they are designated. Often the blade of the Athame is left "dull" or unsharpened because of this.
Proficiency with a Dagger allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.
Nick. When you make the extra attack of the Light property, you can make it as part of the Attack action instead of as a Bonus Action. You can make this extra attack only once per turn.
