Weapon (trident), legendary (requires attunement by a creature not of good alignment)

The Trident of the Mad Seas, known as Abyssal Riptide, is a fearsome weapon forged from black coral and infused with fierce energy. Its three prongs are jagged and seem to crackle with dark, arcane power. The shaft is wrapped in sinewy tendrils that pulse with a malevolent glow, and the entire trident emanates an aura of chaotic energy. Dark, swirling patterns reminiscent of storm clouds and crashing waves adorn its surface, and a faint, echoing sound of distant thunder can be heard when it is wielded. This trident embodies the destructive power of the seas and the corrupting influence of the Betrayer's Son, whispering dark thoughts to its wielder and urging them toward domination and chaos.

You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Fearsome Strike. When you hit a creature with the trident, the target must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of you for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Call of the Abyss. As an action, you can summon a storm surge in a 30-foot radius around a point you can see within 120 feet. Each creature in that area must make a DC 17 Strength saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 27 (6d8) bludgeoning damage and is pulled 20 feet closer to you. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and isn’t pulled. Once used, this property can’t be used again until the next dawn.

Miasmic Presence. While attuned to the trident, you have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.

Innate Spellcasting. The trident has 5 charges. While holding the trident, you can cast the following spells, using the trident's charges (spell save DC 17), requiring no material components:

  • Blindness/Deafness (1 charge)

  • Shatter (1 charge)

  • Dominate Beast (3 charges)

  • Dominate Person (3 charges)

  • Telekinesis (3 charges)

The trident regains 1d4 + 1 expended charges daily at dawn.

Underwater Affinity. While holding the trident, you gain a swim speed of 60 feet and can breathe underwater.

Sentience

Abyssal Riptide is a sentient chaotic evil weapon with an Intelligence of 18, a Wisdom of 16, and a Charisma of 20. It has hearing and dark vision out to a range of 120 feet.

The weapon can speak, read, and understand Abyssal and Common, and it can communicate telepathically with its wielder. Abyssal Riptide has a brooding and cunning personality, constantly whispering dark thoughts and urging the wielder toward chaos and domination.

Personality

The trident harbors a deep hatred for order and authority. It seeks to overthrow any semblance of control and spread chaos wherever possible. It desires to be wielded by someone with the ambition to dominate and the ruthlessness to do whatever it takes to achieve power.

Proficiency with a Trident allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Topple. If you hit a creature with this weapon, you can force the creature to make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 plus the ability modifier used to make the attack roll and your Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, the creature has the Prone condition.
