Weapon (greatsword), very rare (requires attunement)

The death of Argynvost enraged the spirit of Vladimir Horngaard, the greatest of the dragon’s knights. Horngaard returned as a revenant and swore to avenge the destruction of the order. His zeal was so great that it also brought back the spirits of several other knights, who rose as revenants under Vladimir’s command.

This silvered sword's guard is sculpted like a pair of dragon wings and its pommel is in the shape of a silver dragon's head holding a black opal between its teeth. The weapon has absorbed the energy of Argynvost's breath weapon, giving it the following properties:

  • You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made using this magic weapon. On a hit, the weapon deals an extra 1d6 cold damage.
  • Whenever you roll a 20 on your attack roll with this magic weapon, each creature of your choice within 5 feet of the target takes 5 cold damage.

The weapon is also fueled by the wrath of Vladimir Horngaard's vengeful spirit, which gives it the following additional properties:

  • When used against Strahd von Zarovich, the bonus to attack and damage rolls increases to +3.
  • The weapon has 6 charges and regains 1d4 + 2 expended charges daily at dawn. When you hit a creature with an attack using this weapon, you can use a bonus action to expend 1 of its charges to summon a spectral warrior from the weapon which haunts the target of your attack until the start of your next turn. While haunted by the spectral warrior, the target has disadvantage on attack rolls against you.

Sentience. Argynvost is a sentient chaotic evil weapon with an intelligence of 16, a Wisdom of 12, and a Charisma of 18. It has hearing and darkvision to a range of 60 feet.

Personality. Argynvost's Wrath was given sentience by the centuries of hatred of Vladimir Horngaard. It feeds of hatred and lusts for revenge and will always attempt to sway the wielder to hunt down and destroy those they hate most until all that's left of its wielder is a hateful shell of their former self.

Curse. This weapon is cursed and possessed by the vengeful spirit of Vladimir Horngaard. Becoming attuned to it extends the curse to you. As long as you remain cursed, you are unwilling to part with the weapon, keeping it within reach at all times. While attuned to this weapon, you have disadvantage on attack rolls made with weapons other than this one.

In addition, while the weapon is on your person, you must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw whenever you take damage in combat. On a failed save, you must attack the creature that damaged you until you drop to 0 hit points or it does, or until you can’t reach the creature to make a melee attack against it.

You can break the curse in the usual ways, such as with the remove curse spell or similar magic.

Wakened

When the weapon reaches a wakened state, it gains the following properties:

  • Vladimir Horngaard's vengeful spirit is banished from the weapon removing the curse from it. This also causes the weapon to lose the properties given by the vengeful spirit.
  • The bonus to attack and damage rolls increases to +3, and the extra cold damage dealt by the weapon increases to 2d6.
  • As an action, you can unleash a 30-foot cone of destructive energy from the weapon. Each creature in that area must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 8d6 cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Once this action is used, it can’t be used again until the next dawn.

Proficiency with a Greatsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Graze. If your attack roll with this weapon misses a creature, you can deal damage to that creature equal to the ability modifier you used to make the attack roll. This damage is the same type dealt by the weapon, and the damage can be increased only by increasing the ability modifier.

Notes: Bonus: Magic, Damage, Combat, Heavy, Two-Handed, Graze
