This masterfully crafted weapon appears somewhere between the size of a javelin or spear at first glance. However on closer inspection it has the ability to extend or collapse the length of its grip when one speaks the correct command word. This weapon from an ancient era was clearly made by an unknown master smith and enchanter and is fit for a champion. The weapon is surprisingly heavy (regardless of its size) but not unwieldy and can be thrown like a spear or javelin, dealing far more damage than a normal weapon at range or in melee.
When you roll a 20 on your attack roll with this magic polearm, the target takes an extra 7 (2d6) damage of the weapon’s type.
As a bonus action you may speak the command word of this polearm and cause it to extend 5 feet to a maximum of 10 feet or shrink by five feet to a minimum of 2 feet.
When using only one hand the spear's full potential is limited. When the spear is fully extended it may be used with two hands in order to benefit from the following.
- Reach is increased by 5 feet.
- Damage increases from a D8 to a D10.
Once per turn you can use one of the following effects depending on the configuration of the weapon:
- (Two handed only) Glaive Graze. If your attack roll with this weapon misses a creature, you can deal damage to that creature equal to the ability modifier you used to make the attack roll. This damage is the same type dealt by the weapon, and the damage can be increased only by increasing the ability modifier.
- (Two handed only) Halberd Hack. If you hit a creature with a melee attack roll using this weapon, you can make a melee attack roll with the weapon against a second creature within 5 feet of the first that is also within your reach. On a hit, the second creature takes the weapon’s damage, but don’t add your ability modifier to that damage unless that modifier is negative. You can make this extra attack only once per turn.
- (Two handed only) Pike Push. If you hit a creature with this weapon, you can push the creature up to 10 feet straight away from yourself if it is only one size larger than you or smaller.
- (One handed or thrown) Javelin Jab. If you hit a creature with this weapon and deal damage to it, you can reduce its Speed by 10 feet until the start of your next turn. If the creature is hit more than once by weapons that have this property, the Speed reduction doesn’t exceed 10 feet.
- (One handed or thrown) Trident Topple. If you hit a creature with this weapon, you can force the creature to make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 plus the ability modifier used to make the attack roll and your Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, the creature has the Prone condition.
- (One handed or thrown) Spearing Sap. If you hit a creature with this weapon, that creature has Disadvantage on its next attack roll before the start of your next turn.
Proficiency with a Trident allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.
Topple. If you hit a creature with this weapon, you can force the creature to make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 plus the ability modifier used to make the attack roll and your Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, the creature has the Prone condition.
