Many rings have the ability to store spells, but no others have the ability to store raw magic. Once belonging to the Dragon Rider Brom Holcombsson, this gold and sapphire ring radiates an aura of immense power.
Well of Immense Power
A creature attuned to the ring can store their magic in it, increasing the ring's charges by one for every two levels of spell slots expended. Aren can hold up to 100 charges. When found, it contains 4d10 charges.
Additionally, as a reaction, you can absorb the life force of any creature that has died within the last minute as long as their corpse is within 5 feet of you. When you absorb a creature's life force, gain charges equal to the creature(s)'s level(s). Any creatures who have had their life force absorbed in this way may not be resurrected except through the use of a True Resurrection or Wish spell.
Casting from the Ring
While wearing and attuned to this ring, you can expend charges to cast any spell you have prepared. The charges expended are equal to the spell's level. You may also expend charges from the ring in combination with spell slots.
Additionally, you may choose to use the ring to cast a spell of which you do not have prepared, do not know, or of a level you are unable to cast naturally. When doing so, expend charges equal to twice the spell's level and roll 1d100, and consult the table below for the result.
Casting Outcome
| Familiarity | Major Mishap | Minor Mishap | Partial Success | Complete Success |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Known Spell, but not Prepared | — | 01-33 | 34-53 | 54-00 |
| Unknown Spell | 01-33 | 34-53 | 54-73 | 74-00 |
| Unable to cast naturally | 01-53 | 54-73 | 74-93 | 94-00 |
Familiarity. Here are the meanings of the terms in the table's Familiarity column:
- "Known Spell, but not Prepared" means a spell that you know inherently, is listed in your spellbook, etc. This does not include spells inscribed on spell scrolls you have access to.
- "Unknown Spell" means a spell that is part of your class, but is not copied into your spellbook.
- "Unable to cast naturally" means any spell that is not part of your class, or is a higher level than your current abilities allow (i.e., casting a 9th-level spell when only having access to 5th-level spell slots).
Major Mishap. While Aren's immense power allows feats outside the scope of a magic user's normal capabilities, its use is not without risk. The casting of the spell fails but still consumes charges and any action, bonus action, or reaction that was used to cast the spell is also consumed. The caster takes (twice the number of charges used to cast the spell)d10 Force damage, reduces their hit point maximum by the amount of damage taken, and gains one level of exhaustion. If this effect reduces a creature's hit point maximum to 0, the creature dies, and its remaining energy is stored in the ring, giving Aren charges equal to the caster's level. This reduction to a creature's hit point maximum lasts until the creature finishes a long rest, increasing by 1d10 + spellcasting modifier per day until it reaches its previous maximum. This can only happen if the creature currently has no levels of exhaustion.
Minor Mishap. The casting of the spell fails but still consumes charges, as well as any action, bonus action, or reaction that was used to cast the spell. The caster takes (the number of charges used to cast the spell)d4 Force damage and reduces their hit point maximum by half the amount of damage taken.
Partial Success. The spell succeeds but with a lower potency (lower DC, less damage dice, reduced duration, etc.) as determined by the DM.
Complete Success. The spell is cast as if the caster has met any requirements needed to cast the spell (including level and class, or verbal, somatic, and/or material components).
